  2. What is the CESMAT? • Center for Advanced Studies in Mineral Resources • Advanced studies institution for upper management. Staff working in mining industry • Created in 1975 by the French Ministry of Industry • to promote exchanges amongst the various sectors of technical mining expertise • to establish a network of relations with the mineral producing countries all around the world • through training and technical cooperation • Seven 9 months training programs • Profile of the trainees: Mine engineers, geologists, or managers involved in mining industry with several years of professional experience

  4. Specificities of CESMAT programs • Training on basic knowledge AND on more up to date methods: how they do relate together • Training for future experts and future managers, trained together • Exchanges amongst the various sectors of technical mining expertise • Exchanges amongst trainees with very different previous experience • 1975  2013 : 2629 trainees from 114 countries

  5. Training of Executive staff in Mining Industry Future of Mining Industry • Ore bodies are likely to be: • less rich • deeper • in a more complex geological context • Mining these ore bodies requires performing techniques, innovative advances • Correct use of these requires good quality training • Correct choice of these requires good quality training of people who take technical decisions

  6. Training of Executive staff in Mining Industry • Young staff initial training not always exactly tuned to the job • After some time, change of job in the company can require retraining: when people gain responsibilities, the competencies they need change. • Well trained company staff can produce innovation or innovation needs to be introduced in companies via training • Companies can need experts coming from their own ranks

  7. Training of Executive staff in Mining Industry • Hire already trained people (e.g. consultants) • Train the company staff • A lot of possible training systems: • Training at distance (e-learning) • In house training • Training out of company grounds • Short time training • Long time training

  8. Training of Executive staff in Mining Industry • Training method must be adapted to the training content • Difficult to get a practical training online • Training must be adapted to prior knowledge, OR prior knowledge must be consistent with the training content • When the training is difficult, it is necessary to train highly performing and highly motivated people • In times of economic difficulties, the staff must be efficient -> well trained

  9. Training of Executive staff in Mining Industry • Importance of consistency between technical training needs and Human Resources management • What is the best training for a given need? • THANKS FOR YOUR ATTENTION
