  1. Weather and Climate Responses to the threat of climate change Global: reducing carbon emission, Kyoto Protocol, carbon credits Local responses: transport strategies, taxation, congestion charging, conserving energy, recycling.

  2. To reduce Global Warming we need to: • Reduce our emissions of Carbon Dioxide, Methane and Nitrous Oxides (Greenhouse gases)

  3. Conserve energy Cycling rather than using a car Recycling so that new products don’t have to be made Buying organic food to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers Paying to offset your carbon at: http://www.carbonadvicegroup.com/uk/car_calculator.php What can individuals do?

  4. Promote the use of park and ride schemes so more people use buses, trams and trains Grants for homeowners to install insulation (reduces use of gas and electricity) Recycling programmes e.g. green bins for garden waste Congestion charging to encourage people to use public transport and reduce carbon dioxide from car fumes What can local councils do?

  5. Strict MOT tests on emissions Higher road tax for cars with bigger engines Power stations must be fitted with pollution filters to reduce emissions Invest in green energy sources e.g. solar power and wind power What can the national government do?

  6. Meet to agree targets and make laws to reduce emissions e.g. Kyoto Protocol Kyoto Protocol became law in 2005 and aims to reduce the carbon emissions of 37 industrialised countries What can the international community do?

  7. So what are carbon credits and offsetting? • Organisations / countries are given an amount of Carbon they can use. They get 1 credit for every 1 tonne of Carbon • If they use less they can sell the credits to others who need them • This helps countries and organisations work towards reducing their consumption Q1. Read page 72 – 73. Complete the activity at the bottom of page 73.
