    1. Chapter 3 Personal, Social, and Moral Development Adolescent Generativity EDUC 205 Alexa Miller Marina Hall Alex Mandekic

    2. Definition of Terms: Erikson: developed 8 stages of psychosocial development Psychosocial development: the relation of the individual emotional needs to the social environment. Generativity: care and concern for the next generation Generative concern: an individuals felt sense of caring for the next generation. Generative action: an action or behavior that benefits future generations. Authoritative Parenting Style: classifies as warmth and control of children's behavior. Community Involvement: volunteer work, political and religious involvement. Youth Inventory of Involvement (YII): measures extent to which an individual has become involved in various activities and organizations over the past years.

    3. Purpose: To investigate factors in the early development of generativity, from late adolescence into young adulthood. The Factors Tested: Authoratative Parenting Style Community Involvement These aspects are important for fostering personal growth and development for future generations.

    4. Methodology This is an example of a Descriptive Study because of the use of collection of surveys over a six year time frame. Also, a correlational study because it measures the relationship between two distinct factors. Procedure: Surveys were collected 1997, 1999, and 2003 in Urban central Ontario, Canada. 1997: 896 students (61% female, 88% white, 94% average to above average income levels and 73% had intact families). 1999: 337 students completed surveys(38% of original study and 71% female) 2003: - 198 students completed the survey

    5. Methodology: Survey Demographics Adjustment measures: Depression, self-esteem, and social support Community involvement Used YII Generative concern Loyola Generativity Scale Rated in 1999 & 2003 Authoritative parenting Measures of responsiveness and strictness Only rated in 1997

    6. Findings Demographics & Adjustment measures Similar backgrounds Strong adjustment: .86-.92 Authoritative parenting affecting generativity Positive correlation between 1997 and 2003 Community involvement affecting generativity Positive correlation Greater predictor of generativity than parenting Therefore, both authoritative parenting and community involvement contributed uniquely to generativity in 2003

    7. Conclusions Increase in generative concern over 6 years corresponds with Eriksons model of generativity Authoritative parents tend to be more generative, which extends to adolescent offspring Community involvement predicted generative concern MORE THAN authoritative parents Personal responsibility demonstrates capacity for demonstrating initiative Generative concern and Generative action are reciprocal Generativity is a coherent construct meaningful well before midlife

    8. Reflections Community involvement much like new college admissions standards Constant ideal to improve children = increased pressure Stages arent concrete Generativity can also be egocentric (for my resume) Its always wise to re-evaluate theories as society changes
