  1. CyberKnife Truly a Technological Advancement Mohammad AlBader

  2. What is the Cyberknife? • CyberKnife is a robotic radio surgery system that treats both cancerous and non cancerous tumors. • Developed to treat all sorts of tumors anywhere in the body, like the brain, lungs, liver, and spine. • CyberKnife Background Information

  3. Brain • Requires medical staff such as: • Neurosurgeon • Radiation Oncologist • Medical Physicist • Radiation Therapist • The patient is fitted with a mesh mask by the therapist to keep the patient comfortable during the procedure.

  4. Lungs • It is very tricky because the tumor moves as the patient breathes. • Also requires a medical staff similar to the brain tumor medical staff. • Some patients are required to get “fiducial markers” planted around the tumor.

  5. Liver • A team of medical staff is required. • Images of the tumor are taken during set-up. • Patient wears a custom body cradle. • Patient also wears a synchrony vest.

  6. Spine • CyberKnife delivers high doses of radiation unlike other systems like the Gamma Knife. • CyberKnife takes one to five days, Gamma Knife take weeks and even months. • Since the spine moves, the patient is required to get fiucial markers planted around the tumor.

  7. Conclusion • Overall the CyberKnife treats many sicknesses: • Lungs • Brain • Spine • Liver • Pancreas, and more • Michael, a patient who had a lung tumor said, “I was able to walk to my treatments, and walk home.”

  8. Conclusion Continued • One of the CyberKnife centers in the States called Morse CyberKnife in Florida. • Miami/ Palm Beach CyberKnife Center
