  1. Best Practices for Implementing Banner Finance 2006 CONFERENCE October 23 & 24

  2. Sean James, Internal Auditor-Controller with KCCDMickey Hughes, Finance Consultant with SGHE 3CBG Conference - October 23rd and 24th

  3. So, you are new to Banner Finance? • Let’s look at some things your team at your College needs to consider 3CBG Conference - October 23rd and 24th

  4. Best Practices ? • What happens when less than Best Practices are used • Can we ever recover from starting off with less than Best Practices? 3CBG Conference - October 23rd and 24th

  5. Best Practices • Develop task list of things that need to be done • Develop list of team members to do these new tasks • Develop list of other team members to do everyday things that have to be done while the new system is coming up • Identify College staff member who can be an effective Project Manager and work with your SGHE PM to get the job done on time • Identify additional resources! 3CBG Conference - October 23rd and 24th

  6. So, you are new to Banner Finance? • Let’s look at some things the team at your College needs to consider 3CBG Conference - October 23rd and 24th

  7. Best Practices • Assign specific people to specific tasks • Develop critical dates when certain tasks must be completed • Develop feed back mechanisms where progress can be recorded, tracked and yes, where lack of progress can be easily spotted and action taken • Identify dependencies, where some tasks are relying upon the completion of other tasks – these can be troublesome 3CBG Conference - October 23rd and 24th

  8. More Best Practices • Be realistic • About your people, they are only human • About the time allocated to the project • Do you have a year? Or do you only have four months? • About which modules you can “go-live” with during “Phase I”, and which may have to come up in subsequent “Phases” 3CBG Conference - October 23rd and 24th

  9. More Best Practices • Expect the best: • Project Management from your College • Project Management from SGHE • Participants in the Teaching/Learning process • View SGHE as your partner in success 3CBG Conference - October 23rd and 24th

  10. Lets enter a few more from the room: 3CBG Conference - October 23rd and 24th

  11. Some things I have seen • One College involved a person from the Student effort and one from the Human Resource effort in the Finance effort • So how did it go? • That College devoted adequate time to the Banner Finance Go-Live Project • So how did it go? 3CBG Conference - October 23rd and 24th

  12. Some other sights • Clients didn’t participate in project management • Clients appointing Project Managers based on politics rather than skill • So how did it go? • Clients didn’t carefully consider which employee staffers should be in which training sessions • So how did it go? • Clients didn’t pay attention to their task list until too late • So how did it go? 3CBG Conference - October 23rd and 24th

  13. Even more creepy sights • Client Management at one place lied to their staff about “Go-Live” dates in order to push their employees to work harder, over and over again • So how did it go? • Client participants in training sessions were stone silent – no feedback • So how did it go? • Client participants at another place were argumentative • So how did it go? • Clients wanted to replicate their old system 3CBG Conference - October 23rd and 24th

  14. More “not so good” • Client didn’t have highest level “buy-in” on the process of going to Banner • So how did this work out? • Client didn’t work on Banner between visits of the trainer/consultant • So how did this work out? 3CBG Conference - October 23rd and 24th

  15. More “not so good” from others in the room: • ? 3CBG Conference - October 23rd and 24th

  16. Do you have any questions? 3CBG Conference - October 23rd and 24th

  17. Thank youfromSean James, KCCDMickey Hughes, SGHE 3CBG Conference - October 23rd and 24th
