What is Politics? • The activity through which humans attempt to improve their lives and create a better society. • The manner in that people use to make, preserve and amend the general rules that they live under. • It can be seen as the process of rule based on order and justice. • Politics is driven by the considerations of the common good.

  4. The main goal is to resolve conflict although not all conflicts can be resolved. • Therefore it can also be thought of as a way of exercising power. • Politics is driven by selfish interests ofindividuals, groups, businesses, states. • More natural for the thinking of those who would like to change the status quo (current situation).

  5. Politics is often understood as: the art and science of GOVERNMENT, as affairs of STATE But: The government is rooted in society. The government maintains a particular social order. Politics outside the state is important. Interactions between state and society are at the core of politics. So, to understand politics, it has to be examined as part of the entire fabric ofSOCIAL RELATIONS – cooperation and conflicts between individuals, groups, classes.

Democracy – Basic Elements • It is consent of the governed (process) • Freeand fair elections in which government can be defeated • Equalityof political rights • Protectionof individual rights (outcome) • Civil liberties: the freedom of a citizen to exercise given rights such as speech, with out the arbitrary (random) interference of the government.

Political Parties: Essential To Democracy • Political parties have existed since the first decade of the new government’s existence. • Americans have always had uncertain feelings about them. • Parties are necessary, and they perform vital functions. • But they have always been complicated, full of internal conflict, disorganized and decentralized, rigid but capable of being taken over by reformers.

  8. Parties often mirror American society and are deeply rooted in the democratic process.

Party Functions • Organize the Competition • Unify the Electorate (voters) • Inspire and Inform Voters • Translate Preferences into Policy (plan) • Provide Loyal Opposition to promote an exchange of ideas • Organize Government • Help Govern • Act as Watchdogs • Nominate Candidates • Ensure Candidate Quality
