  5. CALIFORNIOS • TREATY OF GUADALUPE HIDALGO ENDED THE WAR WITH MEXICO • THE LAND LAW OF 1851 MADE UP A GROUP OF PEOPLE TO REVIEW THE CALIFORNIOS LAND RIGHTS

  6. LIFE IN CALIFORNIA • BUILT NEW COMMUNITIES CALLED BOOMTOWNS • SAN FRANSICO GREW FROM A TINY VILLAGE TO CITY OF ABOUT 20,000 PEOPLE • CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH MORE THAN DOUBLED THE WORLDS SUPPLY OF GOLD

  7. GOLD RUSH SOCIETY • MINING TOWNS HAD NO POLICE OR PRISON,SO LAW BREAKERS POSED A REAL THREAT TO BUISNESS OWNERS AND MINERS • CITIZENS FORMED VIGILANCE COMMITTEE TO PROTECT THEMSELVES • THE VIGILANCE TOOK THA LAW INTO THEIR OWN HANDS,ACTING AS POLICE,JUDGE,JURY,AND SOMETIMES EXECUTIONER

  9. CALIFORINAS GOLD RUSH • DOCTORS THEIR PILLS,THE PRIESTS THEIR PRAYER BOOKS,AND ALL ARE NOW DIGGING GOLD • BY THE END OF 1848,THEY HAVE TAKEN $6 MILLION IN GOLD FROM THE AMERICAN RIVER • AMERICANS MADE UP ABOUT 80% PERCENT OF THE FORY-NINERS
