  2. The Olympic Games have a very long history. The ancient Greeks organised running events every four years to honour the god Zeus. They began in 776 B.C. and took place for nearly 1.200 years, at Olympia, in Greece. They included many different kinds of sports, among them running, boxing and wrestling. All the cities in Greece sent their best athletes to the city of Olympia to compete in the games. Thousands of people from all parts of Greece came to see the games.    Fifteen hundred years later, in 1894, a Frenchman Baron Pierre de Coubertin addressed a circular to all the governing bodies ( of sport in which he pointed out the educational value of sport to modem peoples.   The first of the modern series of Games took place in Athens two years later, in 1896, on the site where the ancient festivals had been held 1.500 years before. Since then, except in 1916, 1940 and 1944, the Olympic Games have been held every leap-year.

  3. The London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony took place at 9pm on 27 July 2012. Titled 'Isles of Wonder', the Ceremony welcomed the finest athletes from more than 200 nations for the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games, marking an historic third time the capital has hosted the world’s biggest and most important sporting event. The Opening Ceremony reflected the key themes and priorities of the London 2012 Games, based on sport, inspiration, youth and urban transformation. It was a Ceremony 'for everyone' and celebrated contributions the UK has made to the world through innovation and revolution, as well as the creativity and exuberance of British people. The spectacular finale of the event saw the Olympic Cauldron, formed of 205 copper petals representing the competing nations coming together in London for the Games, ignited by seven young Torchbearers nominated by Britain’s past and present Olympic and sporting greats.

  4. More than 10.5 thousand athletes from 205 countries of the world took part in the Olympic games in London. 302 sets of medals in 37 sportswere contested. In the Russian Olympic team were included 208 men and 228 women from 59 regions of the country.
