How many councils have adopted the Religious Emblems Coordinator Position? • Not all councils have adopted the Religious Emblems Coordinator position (BSA has 300 Councils) • As of a little more than two weeks ago 103 Council Religious Emblems Coordinator patches have been purchased. No numbers for District and Unit • No code on application

  3. Religious Emblems Coordinators can help you retain Scouts • Looking for a time-tested method for retaining Scouts? Put your faith in religious emblems. • The research is clear: Scouts working on their religious emblems remain in Scouting longer. • And considering that more than two-thirds of our chartered organizations are faith-based, religious emblems represent a way to make your relationship with your unit’s chartered organization more of a two-way street.   4. PURPOSE: • Encourage all youth to earn the emblem of their faith • Promote religious emblems usage like BSA promotes other youth advancement • Establish goals and track the number of religious emblems to be completed every year

  5. WHY? Baden-Powell stated, "No man is much good unless he believes in God and obeys His laws. So every Scout should have a religion....Religion seems a very simple thing: First: Love and Serve God. Second: Love and serve your neighbor." (Scouting For Boys, 1908)

  6. WHY? • Religious Emblems reinforce BSA values • Improve relationships with religious chartered partners • Establish relationships with potential Religious partners

COUNCIL Religious Emblems Coordinator • Is appointed by the Vice President of Program • Sets goals with Council Advancement Committee • Disseminates information to District REC’s • Disseminates information through: • Trainings • Professional staff • College of Commissioners Science • University of Scouting • New leader training • Program at Summer Camp and Day Camp

COUNCIL Religious Emblems Coordinator • Works with the Religious Relationships (RR) Committee • Recognizes that the RR Committee is the group that works directly with the faith community to: • Recruit chaplains • Coordinate the council calendar with religious holidays • Sponsor religious retreats • Identify religious representatives from the various faith groups • Strengthen ties with local congregations and chartered organizations

COUNCILReligious Emblems Coordinator • If the Religious Relationships Committee works primarily with the faith community, the Religious Emblems Coordinator focuses specifically on raising awareness of religious emblems and increasing usage. • The REC can learn through the RR Committee which Faith Committees are sponsoring retreats and which congregations are offering classes

  11. DISTRICT Religious Emblems Coordinator • Is appointed by District Program Chair • Sets goals with District Program Chair & Committee • Disseminates information to Units • Disseminates information through: • Re-charter packets • Roundtables • Camporees

DISTRICT Religious Emblems Coordinator • Encourages Unit Committees to set goals (i.e. number of religious emblems that will be earned that year) • Recruits “presenters” to make presentations on religious emblems. Ask clergy of chartered partners, leaders of units that promote religious emblems, Chaplains, etc.

UNIT Religious Emblems Coordinator • Encourages Unit Committees to set goals (i.e. number of religious emblems that will be earned that year) • Recruits “presenters” to make presentations on religious emblems. Ask clergy of chartered partners, leaders of units that promote religious emblems, Chaplains, etc. Serves as a member of the Unit Committee Acquaints all youth with the religious emblems program and the emblems available from their faith group Provides Scout families and clergy with an orientation to the religious emblems program and encourages their involvement Urges all youth in the unit to earn the religious emblem(s) of their faith.

UNIT Religious Emblems Coordinator • Encourages Unit Committees to set goals (i.e. number of religious emblems that will be earned that year) • Recruits “presenters” to make presentations on religious emblems. Ask clergy of chartered partners, leaders of units that promote religious emblems, Chaplains, etc. Disseminates information to the unit’s Scouts and Scouters about any district or council religious emblems activities, retreats, camps, etc. Promotes religious emblems usage like BSA promotes other youth advancement. Coordinates the establishment of goals and tracks the number of religious emblems completed every year. Serves as the unit’s liaison to the District REC

  15. SAMPLE GOALS • Number of emblems (by religion, district, etc.) • Number of presentations made to units • Number of congregations offering religious emblems classes • Number of trainings

  16. RECRUITMENT • Establish communication with the Religious Relationships committee and ask them to help recruit Religious Emblems Coordinators (REC’s) for Districts • Ask clergy of chartered partners • Ask leaders of units that promote religious emblems

  17. HOW TO PROMOTE USAGE OF RELIGIOUS EMBLEMS • Gather information on the religious emblems programs and the various promotion resources available to you • Educate the Unit leaders about these resources • Recognize religious emblems recipients
