  1. Taiga Also called the boreal forest is a region of coniferous forest extending across much of northern Europe, Asia, and North America; characterized by long, cold winters. Some countries it is found in are Russia, Canada and Alaska.

  2. Flight You will fly from Nuuk, Greenland to Irkutsk, Russia.

  3. Why the Taiga? Taiga is Russian for forest and is the largest biome in the world. It stretches over Eurasia and North America. The winters in the taiga are very cold with only snowfall. The summers are warm, rainy, and humid. Temperatures in the winter are around-1°C, temperatures in the summer reach to only -7°C. We have chosen to take you to this biome because the taiga helps the environment and humanity in many ways. The taiga filters millions of liters of water every day. There are other things it does too. The massive number of trees in the taiga removes carbon dioxide (a harmful gas) and converts it into oxygen. The massive amount of trees makes this unforgettable stay beautiful. This is a picture of this taiga in the winter covered in white snow. This is an aerial view of the beautiful lots of beautiful trees you will see in the taiga

  4. Climate • Winters are long, dark, and cold • Summers are warm, short and have 20 hours of daylight everyday • Average temperature year round is a little over 10˚ Celsius • Average precipitation in the winter = 20-40 inches • Average precipitation in the summer = 10-20 inches • Land used to be covered by glaciers which left gauges and depressions in the land- Due to the amount of precipitation, they are usually filled with water • Soil is high in acid and low in nutrients

  5. Major Plants • Coniferous Evergreen Trees - Includes Spruces, Firs, and Pine Trees - Adapted to the cold weather by never dropping their leaves so that they never need to regrow them - Shaped in a cone so that snow can’t pile up and cause the branches to break - Needles are dark green so they soak up the sunlight easier

  6. Animals Snowshoe Hair - herbivores - are prey – colored white to blend into the snow - fur on feet so they can run quickly through the snow without getting to cold Gray Wolf - adapted to environment because their fur is think to keep them warm and away from moisture - large paws for better support in the snow Red Fox - carnivores - hide in dens from large predators during the day - very fast which allows them to hunt quickly

  7. Endangered Animals Grizzly Bear - Their muscular legs allow them to run fast - Their claws are 3-4 inches, which allows them to climb trees - Coat is colored to blend into trees - predators - eat weak deer that are dying River Otter - eyes on top of skull to see above water when swimming under water - colored to blend into the ground and water

  8. History There are many trees that cover the vast area of the taiga biome. Since there are many trees humans started cutting them down. At first it seemed like a good idea but then the losing of trees started to be noticeable. Animals are now losing their homes and food sources. This is why many organizations have got together to try to help forest like this. This To this
