  1. Figurative Language

  2. Simile • A comparison between two things using “like” or “as” Example: The little baby is as cute as a button. He swims like a fish!

  3. Metaphor • A comparison of two things that does not use “like” or “as” Example: He was a little baby when he didn’t get his way.

  4. hyperbole • An extreme exaggeration to get your point across to someone Example: I’m so hungry, I could eat a horse!

  5. imagery • Using specific detail to describe something. The details usually appeal to all 5 senses. Example: The pizza was fresh from the brick oven. It was steaming with deliciousness. The thick cheese ran off the sides of my slice. When I bit into it, my mom could hear the crunch of the crust from across the table! It tasted like a cheesy, pepperoni flavored slice of heaven.

  6. personfication • Giving human qualities to an inanimate object or animal. Example: The leaves danced across the street. The dog hugged its bone during his nap.

  7. alliteration • Each word begins with the same consonant sound. Example: The blue ball bounced behind the brick building.

  8. Irony • an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected. Example: You go on a vacation to get away from your parents. When you walk into your hotel, there they are!
