  2. Regular vs. Irregular verbs • There are two different categories of verbs in French: • #1 – IRREGULAR verbs • Need to be memorized • Each form of conjugation is different—doesn’t fall into a category like “ER” verbs for instance • ETRE is IRREGULAR

  3. Irregular vs. Regular • #2 – REGULAR verbs • Fall into groupings or categories • Three categories in French • ER verbs • IR verbs • RE verbs

  4. ER Verbs • Lucky for you, you already know some ER verbs!  • What makes a verb an “ER” verb?? • It ends in ER of course… • Examples: parler, chanter, danser, jouer, manger, regarder, voyager, etc.

  5. ER verbs • So far, you’ve learned to use the INFINITIVE of an ER verb • An INFINITIVE is the basic form of a verb that is not yet conjugated. In English translation it means “To___________” • Ex: Parler = “To speak” (parler is the infinitive form)

  6. You already know how to say, I like TO SPEAK, They prefer TO TRAVEL. • J’aime parler, Ils preferent voyager. • HOWEVER, you do not yet know how to say, I SPEAK, THEY TRAVEL, because you have to conjugate these ER verbs in order to do this.

  7. ER Verb conjugation • How to conjugate an ER verb: • Step 1- CUT OFF THE “ER” ENDING • Step 2 – DETERMINE THE APPROPRIATE ENDING FOR YOUR SUBJECT • Step 3 – ADD THE ENDING TO YOUR REMAINING STEM

  8. Examples • I speak French – • PARLER - step 1 (cut off er) PARL • Step 2 – determine subject (I) = JE • Step 3 add ending….see list: • Je – e Nous - ons • Tu – es Vous – ez • Il/Elle – e Ils/Elles – ent • Result: Je PARLE francais!

  9. Practice • We listen to the radio • You (tu) work at McDonald’s • He dances at home • We play soccer • They (guys) sing in class
