Compare • Author compare to tell how two or more things are alike • Clue words: alike, both, and, same, also, similarly, in addition, likewise

Contrast • To tell how things are different • Clue words: but, unlike, however, on the other hand, in contrast, even though, still, yet, nevertheless

Example • Read the passage located on the first page of our packet. • On your own paper, underline clue words that the narrator uses to compare and contrast. • What do these clue words tell about people and placed in the passage?

A genuine bill has serial numbers that are clear and evenly spaced, but a counterfeit bill’s serial numbers are fuzzy with uneven spacing. • 3. The portrait on a fake bill is flatter, darker and less convincing than the lighter, more realistic three dimensional bill.
