  1. Tips for Taking Personal Measurements HNC3CI – Mrs. Crowell

  2. Selecting the Correct Size • With a partner, get a flexible measuring tape from the back cabinet (Inches/Cm) • Write the following six measurement categories onto your pink assignment sheet: • Height • Waist • Back Waist Length • Hips • Inseam • Outseam • You and your partner will follow the instructions to take each of these measurements, and record your own information onto your assignment sheet so that you know how much fabric you need to buy! • Ideally, you take measurements over undergarments not over clothes…but, for today, we’ll skip this step 

  3. Measuring Your Height • Stand against a wall in bare or sock feet • Have your partnermake a mark at the top of your head • Measure from this point to the floor • For pants and skirts, wear shoes With a partner, take each other’s height now. Take one measurement with your shoes on, and another measurement without shoes on. RECORD YOUR OWN HEIGHT ONTO YOUR PINK SHEET

  4. Measuring Your Waist • Tie a length of string or ribbon around the smallest part of the waistline • It will roll into the natural waistline position • Measure the waistline exactly where the string settles • RECORD YOUR OWN WAIST SIZE ONTO YOUR PINK SHEET

  5. Measuring Your Back Waist Length (females only) • Bend your head forward to locate the prominent bone at the base of the neck • Measure from this bone down the center back to the waistline string • RECORD YOUR OWN BACK WAIST LENGTH ONTO YOUR PINK SHEET

  6. Measuring Your Hips • Measure over the fullest part of the hips in a straight line around the body • For most females, measure 7 to 9 inches below the waist • For most men, measure 8 inches below the waist • RECORD YOUR OWN HIP SIZE ONTO YOUR PINK SHEET

  7. Measuring Your In-Seam • If you are wearing pants today, you can measure along inner seam from the bottom of one leg to where the two legs meet in the centre. • RECORD YOUR OWN IN-SEAM SIZE ONTO YOUR PINK SHEET

  8. Measuring Your Out-Seam • If you are wearing pants today, measure from the waist to the point where the pants bottom breaks slightly on the shoe. • RECORD YOUR OWN OUT-SEAM SIZE ONTO YOUR PINK SHEET
