  1. I am still not feeling well, come in and sit down. Get ready for a serious discussion! • Content Objective: Students will discover the reasons behind the Great Migration. The will be able to outline the who, when and why for this move. • Language Objective: Students will discuss and write the meanings of the words Migration, Renaissance and Depression

  2. Warm-Up • In your groups, discuss the meanings of your assigned word. Write down your word and then as a group come up with one long definition or a couple or words describing what the word means. • Blue Group: Migration • Green Group: Depression • Purple Group: Renaissance • You will have 15 minutes to complete this activity.

  3. The Great Migration

  4. What does migration mean? • Migration is the process of moving from one location to another. This could be moving from one country to another country or just moving in the same town! • Immigration is a kind of migration!

  5. Some basic info… • Who: 500,000 African Americans • What: Migrated from the South to the North • Where: Large cities such as New York, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, and St. Louis

  6. When was all this happening? • The Great Migration happened between 1910 and 1920, especially during World War I.

  7. Why did so many African Americans leave the south? 1. Jobs in the South were scarce (very few) and low paying. • African Americans could earn a lot more money in the North

  8. 2. African Americans faced discrimination and violence in the South. • The South was still dealing with the effects of the Civil War, including Jim Crow laws

  9. 3. African American moved to northern cities in search of better job opportunities. • WWI almost completely stopped immigration from Europe • The northern industries needed African Americans to work

  10. World War I also increased the demand for goods. This increase in demand meant an even greater need for jobs!

  11. It wasn’t easy though… • African Americans also faced discrimination and violence in the North • White workers hated the labor competition

  12. White homeowners were upset that overcrowded black neighborhoods overflowed into white neighborhoods

  13. Chicago’s African American population grew from 44,000 in 1910 to 110,000 in 1920. • Cleveland’s African American population grew from 8,000 to 34,000.
