  1. What is green steel and how is it made? The steelmaking process from the last few decades has brought on many consequences harmful to the environment. One of the impacts is the emission of GreenHouse Gas(GHG), which is a major cause of global warming. But a new process has been invented that reduces the emission significantly and has a low environmental impact. The process results in what is known as “Green steel”. To understand how it is more eco-friendly, we need to understand the process of steel making first. (it’s not super complicated). There are two ways to produce steel -  Blast furnace  Electric arc furnace.

  2. How steel is made In the blast furnace, the iron ore is melted at a high temperature and made to react with oxygen. Coke (cooked coal) and limestone are added to the molten metal where the impurities from the metal react with them and form slag. The gases released from the coke react with molten iron. Here, the CO2 is released in abundance by coal during the process. A tonne of CO2 is released for every 2 tonnes of steel produced. The slag floats on the top and is extracted separately through a notch. The molten metal is extracted with a different notch. The blast furnace method uses raw materials to produce the steel, whereas electric arc furnaces use scrap steel to recycle it. The electrodes installed on the inside of the lid in the electric arc furnace are lowered into the cylinder filled with scrap metal. The electrodes are charged with high-voltage electricity which melts the metal. Here too the oxygen is blown into the metal which reacts with it and the impurities are separated by limestone. In the blast furnace, high temperature with carbon is used whereas in the electric arc furnace, electricity is used. That’s the one other difference in the production methods. So now we have an understanding of how the steel making process works. We also know that carbon dioxide, one of the GHGs, is released during the process. So what makes green steel green? In the process of making green steel, CO2 emission is cut down by almost 80%. Incredible isn’t it? Instead of coal, hydrogen is used in the production process. The new development credit goes to the MIT researchers. The research was commissioned by NASA to discover ways to produce oxygen on the moon. They attempted to produce oxygen by using molten oxide electrolysis from iron oxide and lunar soil which resulted in steel as a byproduct. To make the process more cost-efficient, a chromium-iron alloy was used to replace iridium anodes in the process of oxide electrolysis. The alloy formed a thin layer of metallic oxide on the surface of molten iron which prevented the attack from oxygen but allowed electricity to pass through it. The process was indeed tricky and difficult, as the temperature had to be maintained at 1600°C. Not only does this process reduce carbon emission, but it’s also more economical than the traditional methods of steel making, proving beneficial for small scale factories. The steel produced is also exceptionally pure.

  3. So it’s a win-win for all. To the factories, the consumers and nature. Major steel producing companies in India Like Tata and ArcelorMittal have started producing green steel. By 2050, the net CO2 emission is expected to be zero. ArcelorMittal Europe’s decarbonisation strategy involves using hydrogen in electric arcs and blast furnaces. The company is developing new facilities to produce green hydrogen, which is made from electrolysis powered by renewable electricity. The green hydrogen will be injected into the blast furnace. The hydrogen-rich coke gas will reduce carbon emissions. Tata steel has been testing the process to produce green steel in Europe and is set to bring it to India. In the process, called Hisarna, iron ore is liquefied at a high temperature and then drips to the bottom of the reactor is a blast furnace where powdered coal is injected. Overall, the future of the steel industry is looking bright, cleaner and greener. It’s essential for the steel industry to produce eco-friendly products as much if the GHG is produced from the steelmaking process. The new process paves the way for a safer environment and atmosphere. The new steel is likely to be expensive in the first few years of its production but the future prospects are seen to be more economical.
