Physical Characteristics are Inherited Traits • We know that physical characteristics are traits that are inherited. • The traits that we obtain from our parents determine the color of our hair, eyes, skin, etc. • But what about traits that we obtain that are not visible? • For example, have you ever seen a kid with green eyes and both parents have brown eyes. How did this happen?

  2. How are traits determined? The (T) Straight Thumb is the dominant trait, and the (t) is a recessive trait. The child’s physical characteristic will be to have a Straight Thumb, even though she carries the (t) recessive trait Hitchhiker’s Thumb. Here the offspring (child) obtains a (T) Straight Thumb from the mother and a (t) Hitchhicker’s Thumb from the father. t T T t T t

  3. How are traits determined? The T stands for Dominant Trait and the t stands for Recessive Trait. The first example has two traits that don’t have the hitchhiker’s thumb, and don’t carry the trait, so the offspring will not have a hitchhiker’s thumb. T T TT + = The second example has a dominant trait and a recessive trait. Even though it carries the hitchhiker’s thumb trait, he/she can’t bend it. T t Tt + = The third example has two recessive traits which are the hitchhiker’s thumb, so the student will be able to bend his/her thumb. t t tt + =

  4. This is why a student can have green eyes while both parents have brown eyes. Brown Eyes (Bb) Brown Eyes (Bb) b b The B is the Dominant Trait- Brown Eyes. The b is the Recessive Trait- Green Eyes Green Eyes (bb)
