  1. Abnormally Normal PBC Sermon Series

  2. SERIOUS DISCIPLESHIP

  3. In my Father’s house are many rooms; I go to prepare a place for you • Neither do I condemn you • I am the way, the truth and the life • Come to me all you who are burdened and weighed down and I will give you rest

  4. There’s no greater love than this – that a man would lay down his life for his friends • I have come that you might have life, and have it to the full • Well done good and faithful servant • My yoke is easy and my burden is light

  5. Let the little children come to me • It is I; do not fear • Father forgive them for they don’t know what they are doing • Ask and it will be given you • I will give whatever you ask for in my name

  6. Do not worry … the very hairs on your head are numbered • Your Father knows what you need before you ask him • I am the resurrection and the life … he who lives and believes in me will never die • Your faith has healed you

  7. The good shepherd • The prodigal son • The good Samaritan • The servants who were entrusted with different responsibilities

  8. JESUS TOLD US WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A DISCIPLE: John 8:31 - OBEDIENCE 31To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.

  9. John 13:35 - LOVE 35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

  10. John 15:8 – EVIDENCE OF FRUIT 8This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

  11. Disciples are OBEDIENT and LOVING people, demonstrating the FRUIT of lives transformed by Jesus himself

  12. Go sell everything you have and give it to the poor. Then come follow me • Give to the one who asks you • Lord, Lord … I never knew you • Whoever disowns me before me … I will disown him before my Father • Turn the other cheek

  13. Do not suppose I have come to bring peace, but a sword • If you do not forgive, your Father will not forgive you • You’re blessed when people persecute you • Love your enemies, pray for those who persecute you

  14. Luke 14:26 26“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple.

  15. Matthew 10:37 • 37“Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me • “Hate” = “loves more”

  16. Hate = “relative preference for one thing over another” • Luke 16:13 • 13“No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.

  17. “Disregard for your own life relative to the claims of Christ” • John 12:25 • 25The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

  18. Luke 14:27 27And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. Luke 9:23 23Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

  19. Luke 21:12–16 “They will lay hands on you and persecute you. They will deliver you to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. … 16You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death.

  20. Luke 14:28–32 28“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? 29For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, 30saying, ‘This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.’

  21. Luke 14:31-32 31“Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace.

  22. Luke 14:33 33In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.

  23. We rest on Thee, our Shield and our Defender! We go not forth alone against the foe;Strong in Thy strength, safe in Thy keeping tender, We rest on Thee, and in Thy Name we go. Yes, in Thy Name, O Captain of salvation! In Thy dear Name, all other names above;Jesus our Righteousness, our sure Foundation,Our Prince of glory and our King of love.

  24. We go in faith, our own great weakness feeling,And needing more each day Thy grace to know:Yet from our hearts a song of triumph pealing, “We rest on Thee, and in Thy Name we go.” We rest on Thee, our Shield and our Defender!Thine is the battle, Thine shall be the praise; When passing through the gates of pearly splendor,Victors, we rest with Thee, through endless days.

  25. HE IS NO FOOL WHO GIVES WHAT HE CANNOT KEEP TO GAIN WHAT HE CANNOT LOSE

  26. My richest gain I count but loss … • All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood • Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were an offering far too small • Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all
