  6. The Zhou Period • The Shang domination of central and northern China lasted over 600 years. That is three times more than the US! • 11th B.C.E century the last Shang king was defeated by Wu, the ruler of the Zhou. • Wei River Valley of China became the dependent state of the Zhou. • The Zhou line of Kings was the longest lasting of any dynasty in Chinese history. Lasting over 800 years. 1027-221 B.C.E

Zhou Ideas evolved from Shang ideas • The Zhou preserved many elements of the Shang culture and added new ideas in technology and ideology. • Mandate of Heaven- according to theory, the ruler had to be chosen by the supreme deity to grant power to the ruler of China and to take the power away if the ruler failed to conduct himself justly/
