  2. Imagine you want to buy a new mp3 player.... • What do you ask yourself? • What to buy? • Where to buy? • How much to spend? • Where to research? • When to buy? • When conducting an experiment, scientists also need to ask questions...

  3. Scientific Inquiry:it’s all about thinking like a scientist! • When we conduct a science experiment, we need to apply a variety of skills and processes. These include: • Questioning • Predicting • Hypothesizing • Controlling variables • Planning • Performing • Observing • Analyzing • Evaluating • Communicating

  4. Page 14: Scientific Method Topic: The Growth of Seeds Step 1: Ask a cause-and-effect question How do different temperatures affect the growth of seedlings? Cause – temperature (can be manipulated = the independent variable). Effect – seed growth (can be measured = the dependent variable). Only include one independent variable.

  5. Step 2: Re-state the question in the form of a hypothesis This is an “intelligent guess”. It may be right, or it may be wrong. Relates the dependent variable with the independent variable. If the temperature is high, then the seed will grow faster.

  6. Step 3: Develop a procedure to test the hypothesis fairly Ask yourself some questions! The answers will help us plan a fair and safe experiment. • What is the independent variable? • Temperature • How will we record it? • Thermometer • What other variables do we need to control? • Light exposure, amount of water, type of soil.... • What Materials do we need: • seedlings, soil, containers (same size), watering can, a light source, a thermometer, and a ruler • What are we measuring? • The height of the growth (dependent variable).

  7. Step 4: Carry out the procedure, and collect data Use a chart / table, a labelled sketch, notes, or a combination of these. We will grow seeds in various temperature-controlled environments.

  8. But wait! • What if there are problems? • Change the procedure if there are flaws in the steps. • We can go back to Step 3! If not, go to Step 5.

  9. Step 5: Analyze and interpret the data What did we see? How do we interpret the results? Checkpoint: Adjust ideas if model has design problems (go back to Step 4)

  10. Step 6: Form conclusions based on the data, and compare them with the hypothesis What does our data and interpretations lead us to conclude? How does it compare to our hypothesis? Step 7: Communicate the procedure and results of the experiment Write a lab report!
