  12. Data Access • Direct Readout • Old Satellite Generation – Few countries like Brazil and Argentina • New Satellite Generation – NPP and GOES-R, I guess also for METOP (no user is ready) • FTP • Nearly all countries – slow access to high resolution data, only products. Need near real time data.(Nowcasting) • GeonetCast • Growing - possible solution but need to have also raw (1b) data, Data Requirement and sustainable dissemination system. Human Resources and Poor access are the primary limiting factor for use of, and benefit from satellite data in most countries NOAA Satellite Conference for Direct Readout, GOES/POES, and GOES-R/JPSS Users April 8-12, 2013

  13. Data requirements – A mechanism to approach data users and providers. • February 2010 - WMO Workshop on Satellite Data Requirements for RA III and RA IV held in Brazil. The workshop was attended by Task Team members designated by Argentina, Brazil, the Caribbean Met. Organization, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela, and Bahamas with participation of WMO, NOAA and EUMETSAT • July 2010 - Establishment of a RA III - RA IV Requirements Coordination Web Page. • March 2011 - the last update of the RA-III Satellite Data Requirements Table • April 2011 - A progress meeting of the Satellite Data Requirements Task Team was held in Miami, USA, to review the status of the actions agreed at the first workshop and evaluate the process. • December 2011 – WMO -ET-SUP6 - SATELLITE DATA ACCESS: REGIONAL REQUIREMENTS • Procedure for Defining / Maintaining Regional Requirements for Satellite Data • November 2012 – WMO – General Secretary: Regional task Team was successively concluded and nominated the Regional Coordination Group on Satellite Data Requirements • April 2013 – First Meeting of the Regional Coordination Group on Satellite Data Requirements NOAA Satellite Conference for Direct Readout, GOES/POES, and GOES-R/JPSS Users April 8-12, 2013

  15. NOAA Satellite Conference for Direct Readout, GOES/POES, and GOES-R/JPSS Users April 8-12, 2013

  16. Example of Data Requirements52 different products are presently on the list (distributed in 3 Priority levels: P1; P2; and P3). All the products would require, at least, a 2.1Mbps data rate for broadcasting. NOAA Satellite Conference for Direct Readout, GOES/POES, and GOES-R/JPSS Users April 8-12, 2013

  17. SATELLITE DATA REQUIREMENTS • Dataset available in GEONETCast based in regional data requirements. • The development of a set of satellite data requirements in each region requires interactions between data providers, product producers, the data users in interaction with the stakeholders and end users.   • Satellite data requirements reflect the needs of a Region. The needs depend on the climatological context and the regional socio-economic priorities. NOAA Satellite Conference for Direct Readout, GOES/POES, and GOES-R/JPSS Users April 8-12, 2013

  18. Training – Satellite Users • Well organized in the Region. • Vlab : CoEs Argentina and Brazil • COMET • GEOSS It is why applications is not a major problem in the region…….. NOAA Satellite Conference for Direct Readout, GOES/POES, and GOES-R/JPSS Users April 8-12, 2013

  19. Proposed Training for 2013 • An overview of upcoming training events to be organised by VLab partners was compiled and • partners were asked to further transfer their respective planning input into the VLab calendar. • Planned events will be further validated by the TSO for public view only when partners contact the • TSO to confirm the event tentative dates. 21. The Use of Satellite Data in RA IIIConclusion – What the Region Needs and Suggestions • Real Time Data – Data and Products Access of Different Satellite • Training – practical training on • How to receive the data • Data Pre-Process • Product Access Guide • New Satellites GOES-R and NPP (practical training) • South American Desk for new satellite - the use of Satellite Data NOAA Satellite Conference for Direct Readout, GOES/POES, and GOES-R/JPSS Users April 8-12, 2013

  22. Training USER PREPAREDNESS PLAN FOR THE TRANSITION TO THE NEW SATELLITE GENERATIONS • Hands on – objective training on: • How to receive the data, how pre-process, what software and stations, the satellite data will be available trough…., product visualization. The use of multichannel and products does not seem to be a great issue – right now! NOAA Satellite Conference for Direct Readout, GOES/POES, and GOES-R/JPSS Users April 8-12, 2013

  23. Suggestion • Concentrated Effort Towards the Use of Satellite New Generation • Regular virtual meetings with the region. • Participation of Vlab, Comet, Regional Focus Group, CoE, …… • Region presents the needs and doubts. • Vendors Presentation of the proposal solutions • Help to solve technical problems • Specific Training Sections NOAA Satellite Conference for Direct Readout, GOES/POES, and GOES-R/JPSS Users April 8-12, 2013

  24. Suggestion • Important points that need Clarifications • What will be the GOES-R position -> impact on the user timetable preparation • Considering that Geo – weather forecast and Leo – assimilation • GOES-R is more important in easterly position – more population and users, severe events,…. • Will Geonetcast be an operational system that users can build their operation based in this system? • Users will have pre-process software (raw to 1b) software available for free ? NOAA Satellite Conference for Direct Readout, GOES/POES, and GOES-R/JPSS Users April 8-12, 2013

  25. Vision for Satellite Utilization and Products for the Next Satellite Generation USER COMMUNITY Primary users, two main groups of meteorological and environmental satellite users can be defined: The users having direct readout, rather specialized users who are dealing with “raw data” This first category of users, basically relying on Direct Broadcast transform raw data to level 1 (data calibrated and navigated) and assimilate this information in NWP models and/or produce some specialized products II. The users who are mainly interested in receiving satellite products (the majority of users). This category of users, the one less specialized, can access satellite products from the Internet or by Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) dissemination services, which allows the reception of large amounts of products using low-cost receiving equipment. Extracted from: Luiz Machado and WMO SP Secretariat - Vision for Satellite Utilization and Products in 2025. ET-SUP6 NOAA Satellite Conference for Direct Readout, GOES/POES, and GOES-R/JPSS Users April 8-12, 2013

  26. Suggestions • For the more specialized Users • Create the Satellite Partner • Satellite Application Partners (SAP) – lightning, winds, sounding, cloud classification, precipitation estimation…… • Satellite Validation Partners (SVP) – product validation • Satellite Archive and Dissemination Partners (SAP) – mirror data access and historical data dissemination No Budget – only label and collaboration - One way to South America contributes to the program. NOAA Satellite Conference for Direct Readout, GOES/POES, and GOES-R/JPSS Users April 8-12, 2013

  27. Suggestions • For the users mainly interested in products Users feedback – monthly report describing good examples, problems, product evaluation, suggestions, ….. NOAA Satellite Conference for Direct Readout, GOES/POES, and GOES-R/JPSS Users April 8-12, 2013

  28. Suggestions • Starts the concentrated effort in the use of NPP. • Definition about Geonetcastsystem. • Advertise the decisions about main data format and products and the analysis and visualization system. • Training in the basic System. • Stimulate a new group in South American desk dedicate to work with new satellite generation. • Improve communication between users and data providers - Open Line for information exchange between user-data producers.
