Female Infanticide In India

Female infanticide is the killing of newborn female children. Although infanticide has been criminalised in India, it remains a big issue in our country. Extreme poverty with an inability to afford raising a child is one of the reason. The dowry system in India is another reason for female infanticide; over a time period spanning centuries it has become embedded within Indian culture. Sometimes, mothers kill their female babies to save them from abuse and violence later in life. Child rights NGOs in India have been working very hard to address this issue along with the Government of India in the recent years.

The reasons behind female infanticide This practice has adversely affected Indian society. The biggest and most easily measurable effect is the low female-to-male ratios. In spite of the legal provisions to prevent female infanticide and feticide, it continues to occur in many parts of the country. While infanticide was first known to be recorded in British rule, in some States like Tamil Nadu, it is essentially a post-Independence occurrence. This has been noted in many studies conducted by the agencies of Government of India as well as child rights NGOs in India. 107, Hastsal Rd, Vikash Nagar JJ Colony, Uttam Nagar, New Delhi, Delhi 110059

  2. E-mail-Info@Protshan.co.in Phone no:(+91) 954- 078- 1011 Impact of girl child education on female infanticide India is an extremely conservative and patriarchal society. In this society, women are considered inferior to men in all regards. In most families, the first child is usually welcomed- with joy if it a boy, with sad acceptance if it is a girl. Females are unwanted at birth, ill-treated as infants, and not educated in childhood. Religion and economic status intertwined as one. Due to what caste you're in determines your economic status within society. In the Hindu religion once a young girl is set of to marry, she becomes "property" of her husband's family, but before those arrangements occur, the wife's family would have to hold a well planned wedding. One way of these families avoiding themselves from getting into a situation like this is not having and girl child at all. It's Ironic that although Indians have defied knowledge as the goddess Saraswati, Indian women have been regulated to educational subservience throughout India's history. This is one of the most important arguments presented by child rights NGOs in India. Many such organizations work at the grassroots to raise this issue, including girl child education and female infanticide, but a lot more needs to be done. 107, Hastsal Rd, Vikash Nagar JJ Colony, Uttam Nagar, New Delhi, Delhi 110059

  3. E-mail-Info@Protshan.co.in Phone no:(+91) 954- 078- 1011 The impact of female infanticide Women are the receiving end in Indian society. They are will treated or tortured at every stage. A girl child is in bondage from her very childhood. She is under constant, vigil First by the parents, then her husband and finally her own children. Female infanticide or female feticide is mainly because of the sex determination. There should be legal stoppage to get control over it. All the laws should be strictly followed by the every citizens of India. And one should be surely punished if found guilty for this cruel practice. Permanent termination of license should be done if found practicing this. Marketing of medical equipments especially for illegal sex determination and abortion should be stopped. Parents should be penalized who want to kill their girl baby. Campaigns and seminars should be regularly organized to aware young couples. Although many child rights NGOs in India have been working on the issue, the results in society are slow to appear. Women should be empowered so that they can be more attentive to their rights. 107, Hastsal Rd, Vikash Nagar JJ Colony, Uttam Nagar, New Delhi, Delhi 110059
