  1. Quick Management Tips Martha Buckner mbuckner@ashland.lib.oh.us 224 Claremont Avenue Ashland OH 44805 419-289-8188 ext 22

  2. Touch it once Practical advice but possibly the most difficult to follow… So let’s change it to Touch it twice

  3. File it Filing systems rarely make sense to anyone but the person who created it… So, create a system that works for you and stick with it!

  4. Professional journals Read only those articles which really mean something to you. I peruse the table of contents, if a title catches my eye, I read the article.

  5. Other people’s stuff Quickly peruse the files so you have some ideas where things are. Using your preferred system, re-label the files that you think you might need soon. Non-specific items like correspondence can be labeled “correspondence prior to 10/13/11” and put in the back of the drawer.

  6. When to save…when to toss or…If in doubt, find it out! If you’re not sure you’ll need it again, save it for 2 years. If you haven’t touched it, toss it! I maintain files on my employees and surrender the whole file to my fiscal officer/personnel manager as soon as the person is no longer employed.

  7. Digital files create files for documents, shared documents, and emails. If you don’t know how, ask! Create a system that works for you!

  8. My email folders

  9. A co-worker’s “My Documents” folder… stored on her desktop

  10. My folder stored on the network…

  11. List serves… Join only the ones that really interest you.

  12. Social Networking unless you are the webmaster or have specific work-related responsibilities to a social network site, save it for personal time or designate a small window of time (15 minutes) to job related social network sites.

  13. Give it up… if you work in an environment where your idea becomes your responsibility… …learn to say no. Craft a professional response as to why the idea benefits the library but not you or your department specifically and why someone else should take responsibility.

  14. Identify your weak areas Seek assistance or set reachable goals for yourself. I suffer from F.S.S. so I have difficulty with #1 and #2. Luckily, I have a good memory for where I put things so I am able to compensate.

  15. Your work area If the flow isn’t efficient… …rearrange (if possible)

  16. My work area then…

  17. My work area now…
