  1. Welcome to Haw Creek Elementary & Mrs. Quinlan’s Fifth Grade Class of 2012-2013! (Math/Science Block) Please sign up for your fall conference this evening!

  2. Meet Mrs. Quinlan! • Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania • BA from the University of Pittsburgh, May 1998 • This is my fourteenth year of teaching! I began my career teaching for eight years in Broward County, Florida before relocating here to Forsyth County. My experience includes teaching students in 4th, and 5th grades general education and self-contained gifted. • Achieved National Board Teacher Certification as a Middle Childhood Generalist in November 2005. • Certified in Elementary Education, Middle Grades Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies (Grades 4-8) • Endorsed in Gifted Education and ESOL

  3. 12-13 Grade PLUS All 5th grade classrooms across Forsyth County will be using the Grade PLUS system of reporting. This reporting system uses both standards-based scores of 1-4 and traditional percentage grades.

  4. Formative Assessments • Daily, ongoing assessments/observations that are used to monitor student progress toward mastery of standards. • Formative assessments will receive a standards-based score as outlined in the rubric. • Formative scores will not be posted in Parent Portal. These scores will be communicated to parents in the weekly work folder sent home by the teacher.

  5. Pretest Assessments • Students will be given a pretest assessment prior to each Math unit of study. • Pretests will be scored and used to guide instruction. Pretest scores will not account for report card grades.

  6. Summative Assessments • Cumulative assessments will receive a traditional numeric grade and will be used to measure student mastery of standards. • Summative grades will be posted in Parent Portal and the average will serve as the report card grade.

  7. Science Assessments • Fifth Grade grading scale - “traditional” percentage and A, B, C, F letter grades • 90%-100% ~ A • 80%-89% ~ B • 70%-79% ~ C • Below 70% ~ F • Tests, Quizzes, Projects, and Daily Assignments

  8. Math Assessments • Fifth Grade grading scale – “Grade Plus” • Summative Assessments – Tests and Projects • 90%-100% ~ A • 80%-89% ~ B • 70%-79% ~ C • Below 70% ~ F • Formative Assessments – Quizzes and Daily Assignments

  9. Math Instruction • Students will work to build math fluency, think critically, and problem solve • Daily math work may include: Fast Four, Math Centers, Daily Word Problems, and Mad Minute • Extensions include: Math in History, Math Mysteries, Logic Puzzles, Guiness World Records Math, Mathletes, and more! • Students will have Math homework nightly.

  10. 5th Grade Science • The 5th grade Science Standards include: • Life Science – Cells, Microorganisms, Animal and Plant Classification, Inherited Traits & Learned Behaviors • Physical Science – Properties of Matter, Chemical & Physical Changes, Electricity & Magnetism • Earth Science – Constructive/Destructive Forces, Human Intervention on the Environment • Health will be taught during the 4th quarter

For each textbook, there are many resources available online to enrich children's learning. • Access through my class website or by going to www.eduplace.com/eservices.
