  1. History & Key artists of the genres • RnB – was also known as rhythm and blues. Was originated by African Americans in the 1940s and 1950s. At the time a singer called Louis Jordan dominated the top five Rnb Charts in the 1940s. His band ( Tympany five) which was formed in 1938 consisted of instruments involving himself using the saxophone and his vocals, along with musicians on trumpet, tenor saxophone, piano, bass and drums. • Hip-hop – was also known as rap music involving rhythmic vocal style and accompanied with computerized backing beats. It all began in the Bronx, in New York in the 1970s among African Americans and Latino Americans. Hip hop arose during the 1970s when block parties became common in New York City, especially the Bronx. Block parties were usually accompanied by music, especially funk and soul music. • UK Grime - Grime is a genre of urban music which first emerged in East London, England in the early 2000s, primarily a development of UK garage, dancehall, and hip hop. Grime is generally at a tempo of 14o beats per minute. artists such as Lethal Bizzle of More fire crew, Wiley of Roll Deep crew, Bashy, Kano, Dizzee Rascal, Ghetto, Crazy Titch, Bruza, Skepta, TinchyStryder, DurrtyGoodz, Trim, Dot Rotten and JME and many more. It began in East London and rapidly spread throughout the UK Urban Cities and Suburbs. Grime has since become a movement, a sound of the 'Youth' in and around multicultural UK Cities.

  2. Sub-Genres Of the Genres • UK Grime is ideally a sub genre to Rap & Hip-hop due to the fact that it is just really the UK version to the American’s version. As well as there being technical differences such as the tempo of the beat/instrumental rapped to. However, there are similar things between the two which is the type of sounds used (computerized sounds).

  3. Record Labels • In the music industry, a record label can be a brand or trademark involved with the marketing of music recordings. With UK Grime, there are many people that decide to make their own record label in the UK, even though they are not as famous and maybe not good enough as the pros. Comparing that to Hip-hop and RnB, them two genres involve professionals involved in record labels as well as them being famous to the people all over.

  4. Popular Genre Or More Niche • I think that UK Grime is not a niche because even though it targets youngsters, some adults also listen to this kind of music. Therefore, UK Grime is just a popular genre, particularly in the UK. The public perception of UK Grime is more towards the youth and youngsters because of the way this kind of music can be produced can be through going to youth clubs in which they may have studios to record their music to.

  5. Examples of Record Labels/ Key figures Examples of UK Grime Record Labels are: • Bless Beats • Eski Recordings • Maniac Productions • Black beats • Boom Productions • Swizz Beatz • Boss Entertainment

  6. Competition There are competition involving with urban music such as: • RWD • RapdaScene • Stealth All three of these magazine have sold a lot of their issues of their magazines (don’t know the actual figure). However, this is due to the fact that they are all big companies with high reputations about their magazines. In their magazines, the features would contain: • Free Gifts • Gossips in music • Interviews • Pictures of the artists about that genre • Information about new artists

  7. Cross Media Other media that covers UK Grime can be things to do with: • TV Shows (Channel U) • Radio Stations (BBC 1Xtra) • Events (Raves)

  8. Predictions for The future • Even though UK Grime started from youth centres, I still feel that this genre will develop positively. It may develop by: • More talented MCs and Producers coming in • Rise in competition within the genre • Popularity of UK Grime may increase. • With UK Grime, it has both sides of where this genre may be heading. It can head off the positive way in becoming a top and popular genre for many years to come. However, it can head the opposite direction due to the fact that the kind of music as well as the music videos see or heard are not showing positive things towards the youngers. This can also be said about Hip-hop and Rap.
