  1. Developing and Increasing Personal Effectiveness Student Org Advisor Brown Bag

  2. “More comfortable with practice than philosophy, members of the profession spend a great deal of time developing programs, services and procedures and much less time musing about values that support all those activities.”

  3. Why have student organizations? • Students need to have fun • Learn to work with complicated organizations • Student learning is enhanced • Advisors can play an important role in making sure that these experiences are meaningful

  4. Reflection • What have you learned as a result of [a specific experience]? • What have you learned in class that you can apply to that situation? • If you were to summarize for an employer what you have learned from this experience, what would you say? • If you were faced with this situation in the future what would you do differently?

  5. Administrative Support • Knowing what administrative support is available • If you don’t believe the support available is adequate, evaluate if you should accept an invitation to serve as an advisor.

  6. Coalitions • Student affairs professionals • Best thinking on issues of mutual interest, stronger voice on campus • Can be mutually beneficial – you all know students and their needs

  7. Keeping the Work Rewarding • Watching Students Grow • Enjoying Students • Maintaining Perspective

  8. Recommendations for Continuing Professional Education • Professional Organizations • NASPA • ACPA • NACA • Professional Reading • Training Opportunities • ACPA/NASPA Professional Competency Areas for Student Affairs Practitioners
