  1. Series-Connected Hybrid Update Dr. Mark D. Bird Director of Magnet Science & Technology 2014 Users Committee Meeting Tallahassee, FL October 10-11, 2014

  2. 3 Hybrid Magnets by MagLab, Enabled by NSF’s IMR-MIP(Same Cable-In-Conduit Conductors) MagSci: “High‐field facilities worldwide should establish a global forum for high magnetic fields to further stimulate collaboration, exchange expertise and personnel, establish a roadmap for future magnets, and stimulate the realization of the defined targets on this roadmap.” 1.7m Chinese & Italian as well as numerous domestic projects were rejected due to insufficient personnel.

  3. 25 T, 50 mm Bore Hybrid Magnet at HZB for Neutron Scattering The MagLab/HZB 25 T scattering magnet: 1.6x B, 1.0x solid angle, 1.5x B, 2.0x solid angle Resistive Insert Tested to Full Field June 2014. Combined-System Testing Aug - Oct 2014

  4. Cold-Mass FSU Break-Out Completed July 2014 FSU Sept. 26, 2014 HZB Cold-Mass: Sept 2013 FSU Due: 1Q2015

  5. FSU SCH Schedule • The past has been dominated by the Cold-Mass • Future is dominated by Assembly of Cryostat & System Testing. • Work is Similar to that already performed for HZB. • No schedule change in past year. • If major leaks or other un-planned events arise, could impact schedule severely. • The magnet system contains numerous sub-systems that operate concurrently. All are partially tested during fabrication. None can be fully tested prior to final system test.

  6. 2014 Milestone Tables Impregnating Nb3Sn Coil Impregnation of coil with epoxy was completed ~2 weeks ahead of schedule.

  7. Cryostat Assembly at FSU The cryostat arrived Sept. 5, 2014 and was moved into cell 14 where the magnet will be assembled and operated. It has since been disassembled to allow the cryogenic circuits, both for He and N2 to be installed. It is being assembled with a “dummy” heat load to allow the cryogenic system: cold-box, cryogenic distribution box, transfer lines, SCH cryostat to be tested together.

  8. 20kA Current Leads 0.4 T, N2-Cooled • Bi2223 tape stacks. • Pierced Cu sheet HX. • Full-Scale model (no HTS material) was built to demonstrate manufacturing processes. • Real leads should be tested to full-current this year. 1.8 m

  9. Magnet Cell Isometric User platform Iso-lation Plat-form Diode Stack 12 ft Iron Shield Cryo Instr. Quench Detect ? MRI Rack Shim PS NMR Rack 18’-4” (5.6 m) ~20’ (6.1 m)

  10. Integrated Safety Management If you missed the morning ISM meeting and need to enter the CICC shop: Stop & Ask about ISM! CICC ISM Books • Purpose: • Identify new Hazards, • Remind people of old hazards, • Themselves and their Colleagues. CICC Shop Door

  11. Shims for SCH Magnet 2013 Users: Inhomogeneity as low as possible. MagLab: 10 mm DSV changed to 20 mm w/ loss of 0.2 T. Wire-wound resistive coils provide adjustable tuning (~10 ppm – 1 ppm). Strips of ferromagnetic material installed on cylindrical surface around the sample space provide gross correction (~50 ppm – 10 ppm). Shim system provided by Oxford NMR

  12. Field regulation Flux Pickup Coil NMR Lock Signal Field fluctuations in the 25 T Keck. (0.04 ppm) Data: J. Schiano

  14. QUESTIONS?

  15. Plan View Including Platform: Cell 12 Hallway Cell 14 3 m

  16. User Interface Detail Keck III: Circuit Boards + Ferroshims Air-cooled Circuit Board Shims on removable tube Ferroshims on probe NMR Probe 47.0 mm clear bore 53.0 mm Res Mag ID Dimensions are in mm

  17. Plan View Including Platform: Field plotted on plane through the corner of the shield (22.5° from front or side, blue & red lines below). This is the region where the fringe field extends furthest away from the magnet. At the middle of the plates, (at front, sides and 45 °) the field does not extend as far from the magnet . Cell 12 Hallway Cell 14 Vacuum Pump

  18. Field Above Platform: 0.05T to 1 T Difference ~10% 4” 1018 iron (m) Platform

  19. Availability/Reliability Availability Energy & Personnel are Expensive DC Field Facility operates ~16 hrs/day, 4.5 days/week, ~47 weeks/year High Demand The various magnets of the DC-Field Facility share Power Supplies and there is demand for more experiments than can be accommodated. Typical user gets ~8 hrs per day. Reliability Over past 10 years of operation for the 45 T hybrid, 91.3% of time that was scheduled was provided.

  20. FSU SCH Schedule

  21. FSU SCH Schedule Largest Risk to Schedule: Leak into vacuum space during assembly/testing.

  22. Schedule Uncertainty • Cryostat was being Fabricated in Italy. • We have found numerous non-conformities during inspection at vendor’s shop. • Work is taking much longer than anticipated. • We recently decided to add new Scope of Work in TLH: • Assemble Cryostat • Cool to 4 K • Test valves, Transfer Line, etc. • Disassemble • At this point, we do not expect either of these to impact overall schedule. • Little Contingency Remaining in the Cryostat Fabrication & Testing Schedule.

  23. CIC Technology Qualification and Production Roadmap Jan ‘09 Jan ‘10 Jan ‘11 Mar ‘12 Aug ‘13 Apr ‘14

  24. Pulsed Magnet Fatigue Cycles vs. Repetition Rate & Lifetime Fatigue Cycles Repetition Interval Fatigue Cycles Assuming 24-hr/day, 7 day/week operation • Introducing Cooling Channels into a magnet: • Accelerates Cool-Down • Reduces Average Current Density • Increases Size (for fixed field) • Increases Stress (j×B×r) • Shortens Lifetime (for fixed field)

  25. Cable-in-Conduit Conductor Nb3Sn carries Current when Superconducting Steel supports Lorentz force Helium stabilizes SC (Absorbs >100 W dc power) 100 second ramp w/o Quench Cu carries Current if Quench Main Coil

  26. Series-Connected Hybrids for the MagLab and Others Dr. Mark D. Bird Director of Magnet Science and Technology Dr. Chuck Mielke Director of Pulsed Field Facility NHMFL EAC Meeting Tallahassee, FL July 22-23, 2014
