  2. World History with Mr. Golden __________________________________________________________ The Enlightenment

  3. Objective: ________________________________________________________ FLWBATexplain how changing political thought in Europe led to rebellion against authority

  4. Agenda: ________________________________________________________ • Review • Enlightenment notes • Guided reading • A few more notes… • Primary source analysis • We’re done!

  5. Before we write: ________________________________________________________ Who were the absolute monarchs? • Kings (like Louis XIV of France) oppressed their people • They ruled by “divine right” - the idea that they were given their power by God I dare you to say something about these heels!

  6. Before we write: ________________________________________________________ How bad were these monarchs? Now, now, my good sir. This is no time for making enemies. I wrote a poem that made fun of my king, and was thrown in prison for 11 months. He later wrote manuscripts that were critical of religion and had to flee France for fear of death. FUN FACT: Voltaire was one of history’s great smartasses. While on his death bed, a priest asked him to reject Satan. His response?

  7. Before we write: ________________________________________________________ The Scientific Revolution: The Earth is at the center of the universe! IDIOT! DUMMY! IMBECILE! FOOL!

  8. Before we write: ________________________________________________________ The Scientific Revolution: • People are using reason in order to observe the world around them • New ideas broke with tradition and the teaching of the Bible • Weakened the power of religion

  9. Staple it in! ________________________________________________________ Ka-chunk! Ka-chunk!

  10. The Enlightenment: ________________________________________________________ • Built off of past movements: • Greek philosophy, the Renaissance, and the Scientific Revolution • People used reason, not tradition or • religion, to guide their views on society, • politics, and philosophy

  11. The Enlightenment: ________________________________________________________ This revolution continues into politics, and the debate between these two guys… John Locke Thomas Hobbes

  12. The Enlightenment: ________________________________________________________ Use the reading provided to answer each of the following questions in your notes. • What rights does Locke believe are guaranteed to all people? • What is the relationship between governments and their people? • What is Hobbes’ view of human nature? • According to Hobbes, why are governments created?

  13. John Locke: ________________________________________________________ • Argued that government is formed as a contract between the ruled and their ruler • People have natural rights (life, liberty, and property)

  14. Thomas Hobbes: ________________________________________________________ • Human beings are nasty, selfish, and naturally evil • A strong ruler (King) is necessary to rule the government and keep people from ripping each other apart I kind of look like a movie villain, don’t I?

  15. Montesquieu: ________________________________________________________ Believed that government powers needed to be separated into three branches: • A legislature to make laws • An executive to enforce laws • A judiciary to judge and interpret laws I don’t know about you, but I don’t trust one guy with all of the power.

  16. Rousseau: ________________________________________________________ • “Social Contract”: People agree to be ruled in order to be protected • If the gov’t doesn’t do its job, the people have a right to overthrow it for a new one You Americans have a contract too…
