  3. What is chivalry? • With a partner- create a mind map of the word chivalry. • Put the word in the middle of your paper with a circle around it. • Brainstorm what chivalry means- drawing lines out from the circle with each meaning • Share with the whole class

  4. Chivalry The term “Chivalry” was originally used to describe knightly virtues or a code of conduct upheld by noble knights and/or landowners throughout the middle ages…however, the term has come to mean different things to different people

  5. With your partner discuss…. Who decides what is chivalrous? Where did you learn what was chivalrous? Chivalry seems to run along gender lines (with males doing polite things for females). Do you agree with this aspect? Why/Why not? Do you think chivalry is dead? Why/Why not?

  6. Codes of Chivalry Codes of Chivalry include the following values: duty, honor, honesty, dedication, commitment, fidelity (loyalty), truth, courage, and kindness. What are some examples of chivalrous acts?

  7. On your white board • Write down 1 behavior you consider to be chivalrous. • Examples: Respect, be true, loyal, protect, etc. • Trade boards, trade again with someone else, and trade once more with someone else • Decide if you believe your board has an example of a chivalrous act. • By a show of hands, how many hold a board with a chivalrous act? Justify your reasoning. • By show of hands, how many hold a baord they consider not to be a chivalrous act. Justify.

  8. Example of Rules of Chivalry: Remember this term was used in the middle ages to describe knights… 1. Thou shall follow their moral conscience.2. Thou shall be willing to defend your values.3. Thou shall have respect and pity for all weakness and steadfastness in defending them.4. Thou shall love your country. 5. Thou shall refuse to retreat before the enemy.6. Thou shall obey the orders of those appointed above you, as long as those orders do not conflict with what you know to be just.7. Thou shall show loyalty to truth and to your promised word.8. Thou shall be generous and giving of ones self.9.Thou shall be champion of the right and good at all times, and at all times oppose the forces of evil. Another Example: "Live pure, speak true, right wrong, follow your King." *this King could be your country's leader, or your spiritual leader.

  9. Create…an armor crest/shield Create a crest or shield (used as armor) that depicts YOUR code of chivalry. Remember your creation should provide an illustration or visual representation of your code of chivalry.
