  1. WELCOME A FOUR STEP MODEL FOR INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM DOE# KIS 178375 Brandman University # EDDU 9233 Honolulu, HI INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  2. Today is another work day for you. You will have a chance to go over what is required of you in section #3 of the Portfolio. We will talk about the new lessons you are going to create. These can be based upon the existing lessons we talked about yesterday. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  3. Two goals for today…. Go over section 3 and 4 in the Portfolio. Review all sections. Make sure you have turned in your Info Sheets…I will be dropping people I don’t have a Info Sheet for soon. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  4. 3. 3 new lessons that increase the level of rigor required of their students. Each new lesson must include the following. A. Name of the lesson. B. Changes made in the following areas: 1. Content 2. Process 3. Product C. Rationale for the changes. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  5. Rigor: Teacher Student RESPONSIBILITY DEPTH INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  6. Rigor involves both creating higher expectations (having the students think at a higher/deeper level) and giving them more responsibility for their learning (passive versus active). INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  7. Turn to page #9 in your Portfolios. Also, bring out the questions you wrote down on your 3x5 cards related to Content, Process and Product. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  8. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  9. While we call this “new” lessons, they can be modifications of your existing lessons. You can modify the 3 lessons you assessed in section 2 of the Portfolio. As you have already assessed them and have some ideas about what changes you could make that would increase the rigor required of your students. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  10. Yesterday when we had you create questions to evaluate your life…in answer those questions, you then knew what changes or modifications you need to make in your life. If you asked…”Am pleased with my health?” and the answer was “no,” you then thought about what aspects of the your health that you need to change. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  11. As you assessed your lessons yesterday, you really identified areas where you could make modifications of the lesson to make it more rigorous. The next step will be for you teach the modified lessons this coming school year. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  12. After you have taught the lesson, you will then collect student evidence from the same 3 (HAL) students and answer question #4 in your Portfolio. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  13. The student evidence does not necessarily need to be the same or even a similar product to the evidence you collected at the beginning of the year. But it does need to be from the same 3 students. High, average and low performing students. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  14. You are comparing their level of performance… Exceeds proficiency Meets proficiency Approaching proficiency Beginning proficiency INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  15. 4. Evaluation of each new lesson. Each evaluation must include: A. A detailed evaluation of the effectiveness of the new lesson in creating more rigor. B. Samples of student work from the same 3 students to support those conclusions. C. A caption for each piece of evidence. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  16. Today, each of you will be using your own lessons as case studies. You will be sharing your ideas with others in the class and having a chance to exchange ideas. Putting the work in right now will save you time and effort in the future. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  17. Turn to page #8 in your Workbooks. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  18. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  19. We have provided you a page to write down ideas that you hear today that you can use related to Content, Process and Product. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  20. Turn back to page #9 in your Portfolios Name of the lesson. If you don’t have a name for the lesson, create one. It is not important, simply a way to identify the lesson. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  21. We are asking what changes you will make in the new lesson related to content, process and product that will make the lesson more rigorous. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  22. Content: Think of content on a horizontal line. You want to expand the student’s base knowledge. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  23. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  24. This is adding knowledge to the cabinet file. That can be facts, ideas, sources of information, how to access that information, etc. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  25. This is not adding trivial information, but information (definition, concepts& skills) that will allow the students to think deeper and take more responsibility. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  26. So the first part of modifying the lesson is to determine what content the student needs to understand the lesson in relationship to what content they possess. I can ask you to think about your contract with the DOE, but you can only do that when you have some base knowledge. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  27. The more base knowledge you have the higher/deeper you can go in analyzing and evaluating it. The more limited your base knowledge, the more difficult it is to go deeper into a concept or idea. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  28. What base knowledge would help you evaluate the contract? Knowing the terms of the present contract. Knowing what other employees of the state are paid and the benefits they receive. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  29. Knowing what teachers in other states make. Would it help you to know… The average starting salary of teachers in the US? INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  30. 2012-2013 $36, 141 NEA stat Hawaii is $41, 027 What is the average salary? Content…knowing the definition of starting and average and what those concepts mean. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  31. 2012-2013 $56,383 Hawaii is $54,300 INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  32. This is teaching the concepts behind the vocabulary words. Average salary….starting salary. Statistic…I would want to know. Years of teaching and educational level of the average teacher in each state. I would also be interested in know the average cost of living in each state. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  33. What you would find…as if you didn’t already know…is that Hawaii has the highest cost of living of any state. If you compare it to New York city or San Francisco, the cost of living is less. But compared by state, it is the highest. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  34. So think of increasing the content related to a lesson on comparing your contract by. Providing definitions Understanding concepts and ideas Identifying sources INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  35. Providing definitions What words do they need to know to help them go higher/deeper. Vocabulary…correlates to success in school. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  36. NOW THEREFORE, in consideration of the promises made herein, the Parties hereby agree as follows:      1. Assumption. The Parties hereby agree that, as of the Appointment Time, Acquisition Sub, as successor to 3Par, hereby assumes Executive's Employment Agreement. As a result of such assumption, Acquisition Sub hereby assumes all obligations of 3Par under such agreement in the same manner and to the same extent as 3Par would have been required to perform such obligations in the absence of the assumption. Similarly, Acquisition Sub shall have all rights and Executive shall have all obligations under the Employment Agreement that, in the absence of such assumption, would have inured to the benefit of 3Par. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  37. To have any chance of thinking about that clause in the contract, there are many words I would need to learn. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  38. I think Kindergarten teachers have the biggest challenge here. Some students come the first day who can read, count to 100, know colors, shapes, etc. Others don’t… INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  39. Levels… Amount of content I need them to have by the end of the year. Amount of content they come with… INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  40. So the first way to increase rigor is to teach more vocabulary. For some students that means teaching some basic vocabulary and for others more advanced words. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  41. 2. Concepts…again in that sample contract there are concepts that I would need to know. Assumption Dictionary definition…something taken for granted. Legal definition…the undertaking of the repayment of a debt or the performance of an obligation owed by another. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  42. Some concepts are harder than others to teach. For example…teaching the concept of why someone would do this. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  43. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  44. 3. Identifying sources of information… One of the most crucial 21st Century skills is the ability to assess information. If you don’t know…where do you go to “know.” INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  45. This content of knowing where to go is an essential step in making them more responsible for their learning. Ask three before you ask me! How to use the internet. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  46. 4. Examples… Provide the student with examples of what you are teaching. We’ve talked in other classes about providing students samples of projects that were turned in. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  47. Make the examples more complex! INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  48. 5. Demonstrations…showing the students how. Have the demonstrations be more complex and deeper. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  49. We provided you the depth of knowledge chart on page 3, Bloom’s on page 4 and a Skills, Activities and Product Chart on page 5 of your Workbooks. Think of going from one level to another with you content…the same will be true for your process and product. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM

  50. Whatever chart you use, simply think of going to the next level. Understand that with younger students, especially those who struggle, you may not be able to go to another level, but simply make it more challenging at the level they can work at. INCREASING RIGOR IN THE CLASSROOM
