  3. Acid Rock A new hybrid of rock and roll was created Named after LSD (hallucinogen) 100’s of artists appeared on the scene

  4. Began gathering together for mini festivals Staged “human be-ins” (first was at Golden Gate Park in San Fran) Huge success (20,000) Big name artists performed (The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane)

  5. News spread quickly across the country College-age baby boomers were main audience

  6. The Hippie Culture Most were middle class college grads Rebelled against capitalism and attacked the materialistic American culture Rejected their parent’s way of life

  7. Long hair (“I want the cops to sneer and the old ladies to swear and the businessmen to worry” nudity (everyone is equal without clothes on) Challenged rules and hoped to embrace the freedom of individual expression

  8. Drugs Turned to mind-expanding drugs to enhance their individual potential LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) defined the hippie experience Legal in the US until 1966 Emphasized melting shapes and vibrant colours

  9. Attempted to create a “counter-culture” Drugs were viewed as a way to reach a new level of thinking Haight-Ashbury was the central gathering spot

  10. The Music Rock bands began creating “Acid Rock” The Grateful Dead were a major part of the psychedelic/acid rock movement

  11. The Doors Led by lead singer Jim Morrison Rebelled against the norms

  15. The Decline of Hippiedom Counter culture was short lived Many became wasted addicts, isolated and detached from reality Even music suffered (artists that were “against the man” signed deals with major labels Beginning of the end
