  2. Definition – “WOUNDED” • An injury; One in which the skin or other external organic surface is torn, pierced, cut or otherwise broken. • An injury to the feelings.

  3. Explanation • “Wounds” address the emotional damage defendants / clients bring to our criminal justice units. Most often, we respond to involuntary or voluntary (self inflicted) wounds that have impeded or impacted their life. Without intervention, many suffer until death, or live a lifestyle of drug abuse and crime.

  4. It’s Only A Flesh Wound • The flesh wounded hero. • Takes a licking and keep on ticking.

  11. Healing Process • Admit wound.( talk or write about it) • Examine who made the wound without fear. (your office maybe the safe place) • Allow them not to minimize nor maximize the wound. • Give them the right to feel the pain, hurt, and resentment. (empathy) • Need for support. They’re not alone. • Self love, forgiveness and acceptance. (victim or victor).

  12. Intervention Techniques “HABILITATION” • During the Screening Process or Initial contact, the worker must observe the vital signs. - Collaboration - Autonomy - Listen(evocation/eliciting)- Learn * Spirit of Motivational Interviewing

  13. Motivational Interviewing • Why it works with this population? - Open ended questions - Affirm - Reflect what is stated

  14. Most Important • Affect / Effect • What you say and how you respond has a significant impact on the client. • Wounded defendants always want to know: • Know yourself (wounded healer) • Fear them • Care, understand and know them

  15. Evidence Based Models • Motivational approaches • Family • Friends • Foes • Criminal justice clients must be taught how to survive and thrive in their own environment

  16. Cognitive/Behavioral Therapy • Techniques during individual and group counseling must be sensitive to the wound of the client.

  17. Spiritual/Support Models • Mentoring/Peer & Family • BBBS/Clubs • Faith base/Family
