  1. Welcome to the World of Science Learning more about Landforms, Erosion, Weathering , Earthquakes, and Volcanoes

  2. Table of Contents Landforms……..3 Erosion…………..4 Canyons…………5 Weathering……11 Earthquakes…..12 Damage done to Haiti…..13 Volcanoes………14 Did you know…15

  3. Landforms • Really descriptive definition- a specific geomorphic feature on the surface of the earth, ranging from large-scale features such as plains, plateaus, and mountains to minor features such as hills, and valleys. • Ex. With pictures Mountain = valley = plains = hills = Landforms are not man made!

  4. Erosion Definition - the act or state of eroding or another way of saying it the process by which the surface of the earth is moved away by the action of water, glaciers, wind, waves etc. Fun Fact = Around 20 million years ago the Colorado River begun carving the Grand Canyon at its eastern end! Just by using erosion. The slot canyons below

  5. All about the famous canyons, and where located Part 1 Most canyons were formed by a process of long-time erosion from a plateau level . Sometimes large rivers run through canyons as a result of gradual geologic uplift. Some of these Canyons provide us with scenery and natural heritage that is not very usual to see.

  6. Part 2 Bryce Canyon = • Grand Canyon = Slot Canyon = horseshoe Canyon =

  7. Part 3 Havasu Canyon = Tara River Canyon = Fish River Canyon =

  8. Part 4 Wulingyuan Canyon = Grand Canyon of Yellowstone = Copper Canyon =

  9. About the ten Canyons Part 1 Slot Canyons =The Slot Canyons of Arizona are just an hour’s drive from the more famous Grand Canyon, and these are truly unique. They don’t appear much from the ground level, just a crack in the desert, but on entry you might as well have entered into another world Horseshoe Canyons = The Horseshoe Bend, named for its almost circular shape, is found on the Colorado River. From the canyon walls to the river is a spectacular 1000ft drop. Grand Canyon =The most famous canyon in the world, the Grand Canyon, is also found on the Colorado River. Although not the deepest or widest in the world, it does offer an amazing snapshot into the geologic history of North America. Bryce Canyon = The erosion in Bryce Canyon, Utah, has created some of the most beautiful geologic structures on the planet. These ‘hoodoos’ are up to 200ft high. The night sky above the canyon is one of the darkest in North America, making it popular with stargazers. Up to 7500 stars are visible to the naked eye. Havasu Canyons = Havasu Canyon in Arizona is a bit of paradise on earth. Considered a sacred place by the Havasupai people, it’s not difficult to see why. With its turquoise waters, stunning waterfalls and shady pools, Havasu Canyon is one of the most magical places in North America.

  10. Part 2 Tara River Canyon = Havasu Canyon in Arizona is a bit of paradise on earth. Considered a sacred place by the Havasupai people, it’s not difficult to see why. With its turquoise waters, stunning waterfalls and shady pools, Havasu Canyon is one of the most magical places in North America. Fish River Canyon = The Fish River is, at 650 kilometers, the longest river in Namibia. The Fish River Canyon in Namibia is reputedly the second largest canyon in the world. The Fish River Hiking trail is one of the most famous hikes in Southern Africa Wulingyuan Canyon = Wulingyuan Canyon in China is reminiscent of Bryce Canyon but with its own breathtaking beauty. Over 3000 sandstone pillars tower up to 800m from a densely-forested valley floor, with trees clinging to their sides Grand Canyon of Yellowstone= Thanks to Thomas who has highlighted the grand canyon of Yellowstone, in Wyoming. The canyon is up to 900 feet deep and a half mile in width. Copper Canyon =Copper Canyon actually consists of 6 canyons and is located in Chihuahua in Mexico, and is at least four times larger than the more famous Grand Canyon! The name actually comes from the copper/green color of the walls of the canyon

  11. Weathering Definition - The wearing down of rock, soil, and sediment • Ex. • The water on the beach keeps washing up on the • shore on rubs on rocks till they are smooth. • 2. A glacier runs over a ton of boulders leaving them • smooth.

  12. Earthquakes Definition -a series of vibrations induced in the earth's crust by the abrupt rupture and rebound of rocks in which elastic strain has been slowly accumulating. • something that is severely disruptive Earthquakes can cause a lot of damage. They can also cause/ start landslides and/or mudslides. Here are some pictures of Earthquakes.

  13. Damage done to Haiti • Remember that Earthquake that happened in Haiti last year. Well here are some pictures of how bad it actually was.

  14. Volcanoes Definition - a vent in the earth's crust through which lava, steam, ashes, etc., are expelled, either continuously or at irregular intervals. a mountain or hill, usually having a cuplike crater at the summit, formed around such a vent from the ash and lava expelled through it. Fun fact A volcanoes lava is very hot, but when it cools it hardens and forms a new land. Here are some pictures of volcanoes. There is an active volcanoe in Hawaii , Hawaii

  15. Before you saw this slide show did you know………. • That there are 2 Grand Canyons[ The Grand Canyon and the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone] • How bad it really was in Haiti • That there is an active volcanoe in Hawaii • What the 10 famous canyons
