  2. Ramp – up (T minus 3 months) • USDOT assent (Chip Wood) • IMTC concurrence (#4 on project list) • Inspection agency permission • BCMOT and WSDOT permission

  3. Ramp – up (cont.) • Questionnaire design, agency buy off • PDA selection and purchase • Software selection and purchase • PDA programming / debugging • GIS background layers (GVRD, WCOG) • Design and produce maps • Book motor pool vans, scrounge eqpt. • Hire students (& screen the volunteers)

  4. Data fields • Observe: date/time, port, direction, lane • Observe: vehicle type, occupancy, plate • Residence? (Zone?) • Destination? (Zone?) Origin? (Zone?) • Trip purpose? • Trip duration? • Frequency of crossing? • Passport? If not, how comply w/ ID regs? • Why no NEXUS OR whole family NEXUS

  5. Training (T minus 1 week) • Project goals • Regional geography • Memorization of questionnaire • On-campus practice • Flagger certification • On-site practice

  7. Scope of the Effort • 22 students, 3 supervisors • 18 survey days in July 2007 (7 am – 9 pm) • 12 survey days in Feb 2008 (8 am – 5 pm) • 2 shifts per day • Data “cleaning” • About 15,000 records • About $65,000 cost
