  1. Human Rights in Canada CLU3M Unit 2 Part 2

  2. Human Rights • Human Rights are fundamental freedoms to which all people are entitled. • Equal treatment, free from discrimination and harassment and to have equal access to services • Discrimination • Canada has arguably the strongest Human Rights Code in the world- however there are some groups who are still struggling for equal treatment

  3. Human Rights • Disabled Persons, • People with Mental Illness, • Aboriginals and ethnic minorities • Canadian’s rights are protected at various levels • As we have learned at the Federal and Provincial level- The Charter • However it doesn’t protect against situations where individuals are discriminated against by other individuals or private organizations

  4. Human Rights • Provincial and Federal Human Rights Codes and the Quebec Charter of Rights and Freedoms • OHRC (Ontario Human Rights Code)- what is defined as prohibited behavior is different in various provinces however there are some common ones • The job of the Human Rights Codes is to provide a remedy process when people feel they are discriminated against, harassed or treated in a stereotypical manner- usually based on some form of prejudice

  5. Human Rights • Discrimination • Stereotyping • Prejudice

  6. Stereotype • “Set Image”- generalizations about typical characteristics • Denies people individuality • Simplifies our world, which is complex- inaccurate • Based on incomplete information, almost strictly negative • Applied usually to class, gender, race, age and ethnicity

  7. Prejudice • Preconceived opinion, belief or attitude about a group of people that is applied to an individual • Pre-judgement • Prejudice is always based on ignorance and not fact “I know this one person who…” • Stereotypes lead to prejudice

  8. Discrimination • Occurs when people act on a prejudice or stereotype and treat others unfairly in some fashion • Discrimination is illegal, unlike prejudice and stereotyping, because it violates Human Rights • Two types: Intentional Discrimination: occurs when a person or organization knowingly commits a discriminatory act • Unintentional Discrimination: occurs when people or organizations treat others unfairly but are not aware so
