Student Education Association Purpose: To develop in prospective educators an understanding of the education profession, to provide a united student voice in matters affecting their profession, to advance the interests and welfare of students preparing for a career in education, to promote and protect human and civil rights and to stimulate the highest ideals of professional ethics, standards, and attitudes. --SEAN Brochure by NSEA, 1999-2000

What do you get from the SEA experience? • The NWU Student Education Association strives to make meetings and presentations meaningful to pre-service teachers by including valid topics and presenters. As an NWU SEA member you will receive initial training in a variety of areas that other undergrads will not experience.

  4. How to become a Member • It is very simple to become a member of SEA, all you need to do is attend meetings, pay dues, and get involved!

  5. What does it cost to become a Member? • Dues are $23 for national and state fees and $8.50 for local fees. Local fees go toward the activities that we plan in SEA, making copies, and advertising SEA. National fees go toward free resources from the State and National Education Associations and allows professional involvement in issues regarding education.

  6. Why YOU should join! • Opportunity to meet, interact & share ideas with other students who are interested in K-12 Education. • Develop leadership skills & gain experiences to assist you in your career. • Chance to participate in NSEA/NEA/SEAN workshops & conferences designed for the needs of future teachers. • $1 million worth of liability insurance to protect you any time you are working with school children as a part of your pre-service training.

  7. Insurance Coverage • As a NWU Student Education Association member you will receive insurance that covers you any time that you are in the classroom student teaching, in a practicum, or observing. This insurance covers you in case of emergency for up to 1 million dollars.

  9. What does Membership Involve? • Membership involves coming to meetings that are held once per month (sometimes more). • We require that you show up at the meetings, have fun, be informed about things that are of interest to you, AND actively become involved.

  11. Getting Involved • Brigitte Bussinger-Chapter Chair applied and attended Teacher World two years in a row. This is a one week residential camp designed to provide information, encouragement, and support for high school students interested in pursuing a career in professional education.

  12. Local Involvement • Boystown Model of Classroom Management (December 2000). • Presented by Mary McGuire from BT. Learn the basic 16 life skills of BTEM; how to apply them in proactive and corrective K-12 teaching situations; participate in scenarios; and apply BTEM in developing a lesson for one life skill. • Used in 100+ NE school districts • Will enhance your resume • Typical interview question • Workshop training ($500-600 partially funded by NDE Grant)

Local Involvement • Project REACH (Respect Ethnic And Cultural Heritage) Invited Presenters: Nancy Rowch and Jessie Myles from the Nebraska Department of Education, Director of Education and Equal Opportunity (March 2001) • Infuses multicultural concepts and knowledge into and across K-12 curriculum. • Only multicultural project validated by the US Department of Education. • One of the top programs used by many, NE, K-12 school districts. • Receive K-12 ideas for multicultural content/curriculum integration.

Local Involvement • Beginning and Experienced Teacher Panel • Invited Presenters (October 2000): • Jill Sandquist-Swank--past SEA president; Norwood Park Elementary, Lincoln • Sarah Schmaderer--Belmont Elementary, Lincoln • Alyson Young--Seward High, Seward--Spanish • Dan Evert--Huntington, Lincoln--3rd year teacher • Julie Zimmerman--Southeast High School, Lincoln--Business, 4th year teacher • Judy Welch--Hamlow Elementary, Waverly--Music • From a variety of disciplines and grade levels--(elementary, middle, and high school). • Covering these areas: Resumes, Interviewing, Job Searching, Portfolios, and other areas that you might have questions about.

  15. State Involvement • Brad Wellmann-Student Education Association of NebraskaVice President, 2001-02; Underclass Representative 00-01. • Dan Koenig- Student Education Association of NebraskaSoutheast Region Representative, 2001-02

  16. National Involvement • Brad Wellmann- attended a National Conference in Charlotte, N.C. The entire trip was free because he was the state level Underclass Representative.

  17. National Involvement • Dan Koenig- elected (one of three from NE) to attend the NEA Student Program- Student Leadership Conference in L.A. • Attended the NEA National Representative Assembly in L.A., July 2-7, 2001, as a voting delegate at no cost.

  18. Annual Fall Conference in Kearney • A group of interested NWU SEA members attend this meeting at no additional cost. • 17 chapters from around the state meet and attend presentations on topics that effect them.

  19. Annual Spring Assembly • This meeting rotates sites every year. • This is the Student Education Association of Nebraska’s meeting to discuss business and bylaws. • NWU regularly has three delegates who attend at no cost and were members can be elected to State and National positions.

  20. The NWU Student Education Association holds panel discussions at high schools that have Future Teacher clubs in order to encourage students to enter teaching. Currently the NWU SEA has held panels at these schools- Lincoln Southeast Waverly High Outreach through Panel Discussions

  21. SEA is Growing! • The Student Education Association received its largest boost in membership in 2001. There were 52 NWU students involved in the group which was an increase of 23 students from the previous year.

  24. Outstanding SEA Member Award • This award is annually given to the member who shows outstanding leadership, dedication, and service during their time as a contributor to the NWU SEA. The 2000-01 recipient was Briggitte Bussinger.
