  1. Evaluation of an OPM prototypeP. Gravey, GET-ENST BretagneT. Loukina, PERDYN platformAcknowledgements: ENIB/RESO, Optogone, France Télécom

  2. Outline • Context • Optical design • Characterization results • Perspectives

  3. Motivations • Evaluation of several design options for free-space based OPM • Understanding of the potentialities/limits of optical performance monitoring techniques for transparent networks

  4. Main requirements • Context • 10 Gbit/s / 50 GHz or 100 GHz spaced channels • metro or ULH systems based on ROADMs • Parameters to be monitored • Channel power • Channel wavelength ? • OSNR (measured or calculated ?)

  5. Fibre & L1 lens InGaAs array Grating L2 lens Optical design • 900 mm-1 grating • 512 pixels InGaAs array (25 µm pitch) • ×5 mode size magnification • ~ 360 pixels for the C band

  6. OPM characterization (2 channels)

  7. Gaussian profile reconstruction Detected signal Reconstructed shape 5 channels with same power 5 channels with 5dB power difference

  8. Alarm generation • Number of channels • Power level • Wavelength drift • (Apparent) spectral width

  9. Main results • Reconstruction of 50 GHz spaced channels (10 Gbit/s NRZ modulation) with 5 dB power difference • Power dynamics ~ 20 dB (limited by camera electronics) • OSNR measurement for isolate channels (~ 125 GHz separation)

  10. Future work • Improvement of optical resolution • Revised design with more pixels/channel • Improvement of profile reconstruction • Influence of neighbouring channels • 40 Gbit/s modulation formats • Results should be available for inclusion in D.JP-T.3 • Prototype available for partners from Q4 2007
