  3. the human body is filled with four basic substances, called Four humours, which are held in balance when a person is healthy. • These four humors were black bile, yellow bile, phlegm, and blood. • Greeks and Romans, and the Western civilizations that adopted Classical philosophy, believed that each of these humors would wax and wane in the body, depending on diet and activity. • When a person had a surplus or imbalance of one fluid, then that person's personality, and eventually health, would be affected. • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_humours

  4. Each humour was associated with an organ; when a person had a surplus of that humour, the organ associated with it would have problems. Each humour was also associated with a complexion and body type.

  13. First described by Pope Gregory the Great in the 6th century Became popular in 14th century European art Why “deadly”? Church distinguished between Deadly Sins (aka Capital Vices or Cardinal Sins) and “venial” sins (less severe, could be forgiven through a sacrament of the Church)
