  4. What is a Firewall? • A firewall is usually a software “fence” designed to protect a private network from unauthorized access. Basically, it keeps what you want out, out, and what you want in, in. • Mac has a built in Firewall already enabled • System Preferences • Sharing Icon

  5. What is Spyware? • Spyware is a type of malware that tracks your habits on the internet without you knowing it • Often collects your personal information • Sometimes redirects your web browser • Known to install unknown programs • Slow your processing speed considerably

  6. What is a Computer Virus? • Program designed to infect your computer • Usually results in lost, corrupt, or damaged data • Replicates itself usually without the user knowing

  7. Core Protections • Anti-Virus Software: Detects and removes computer viruses from your computer. • Firewall: Acts like a fence and blocks unauthorized entrants from your computer. • Anti-Spyware: Detects and removes spyware from your computer.

  8. What is Spam? • Spam is unsolicited, non­compensated commercial electronic mail sent in bulk that is usually fraudulent or deceptive in nature. • Often contains spyware and is installed when clicking on an email from an unknown user or on an unsuspecting attachment

  11. Anti-Virus at Home • Sophos operates despite whether or not you are on campus or at home…it is a program that goes where your computer goes.

  12. Tips for Better Security • Make sure to get your Web Browser updates as often as possible. (Ex: Safari and Firefox) • Don’t leave your Web Browser’s security settings on low! Crank them up! • Clear your private data in your Web Browser and use disposable emails when possible.

  13. More Tips for Better Security • Don’t click on Pop-Up Ads! They may contain spyware or other malware. • Watch what you download and the source of the download…anytime something claims to be free, it often comes with a steep price. • Always log off of your Web Browser.

More Tips to Better Security • Understand that cookies might also be used to track your habits on the internet every time you go on the internet. • Sign the Parent-Child Internet Safety Contract and discuss your family’s internet use rules on a regular basis. • Use a Mac! Most viruses are designed for PC’s.

A Word from Legal 1.    It's important that we, the school and you, the parent, work together to educate kids about being safe online.2.    The Policies and Procedures have been set and will be followed when dealing with online security.3.    KSKHS will perform random checks to ensure students are behaving appropriately when online.4.    The consequences laid out in the School Handbook and the Policies and Procedures will be in effect to help students make wise decisions.
