  1. Marzano Design Question 6 Module 17 What will I do to establish or maintain classroom rules and procedures?

  2. Guidelines for the design and implementation of rules and procedures : • Establish rules and procedures at the beginning of the year but be sure to review when rules and procedures must be altered • Rules establish expectations or standards of behavior • Procedures describe those behaviors that help students realize the rules • Rules and procedures are more effective if students have input • Classroom meetings about rules and procedures have a positive effect

  3. Recommendations for Classroom Practice • Establish a small set of rules and procedures • Interact with students about classroom rules and procedures • Periodically review rules and procedures and make necessary changes • Use classroom meetings to design and maintain rules and procedures

  4. Establish a small set of rules andprocedures Areas to consider establishing rules and procedures: *General behavior *Beginning and ending routines for the day *Transition times and interruptions require explicit rules and procedures *Group work and independent work time often need rules and procedures *Use of material and supplies needs rules and procedures LIMIT RULES AND PROCEDURES TO A MANAGABLE NUMBER. SAMPLE RULES BEGIN ON HANDBOOK PAGE 213.

  5. Interact with students about classroom rules and procedures • Best to discuss rules and procedures at beginning of school year. You should explain expectations to students and discuss the logic and importance of the expectations. • One option is to present the rules and expectations to students then ask for student input to modify them • The highest level of student involvement is student generated rules and procedures

  6. Periodically review rules and procedures and make necessary changes

  7. Use classroom meetings to design and maintain rules and procedures • Short classroom meetings can be used at beginning of class to review rules and procedures • Meetings contribute to the student’s sense of responsibility for how their classroom operates • Suggestion boxes can be used to encourage input from students unwilling to share with the group

  8. Teacher Evidence: • Teacher involves students in designing classroom routines • Teacher uses classroom meetings to review and process rules and procedures • Teacher reminds students of rules and procedures • Teacher asks students to restate or explain rules and procedures • Teacher provides cues or signals when a rule of procedure should be used

  9. Student Evidence: • Students follow clear routines during class • When asked, students can describe established rules and procedures • When asked, students describe the classroom as an orderly place • Students recognize cues and signals by the teacher • Students regulate their own behavior
