  1. Research Project for Spatial Sciences Students – Some Considerations for Information Resources Dr. Armando Apan Senior Lecturer, Remote Sensing & GIS Faculty of Engineering and Surveying USQ

  2. Valuable skills for SS professionals (just like others) • Ability to collect, organise, interpret / analyse, present data or information • Hands-on skill for equipment use, software and hardware

  3. Typical Attributes of Spatial Science Research Projects • Mostly applied and interdisciplinary • Intensive use of spatial datasets (maps, field data, imagery, etc.) • Datasets from different sources and custodians • Data quality needs to be assessed if suited

  4. Digital Map Data • Already exist  find them or buy them • Don’t exist  geocode • Don’t exist  capture from reality (by GPS, remote sensing, etc.)

  5. Finding Existing Map Data • Map libraries • Reference books • State and local agencies • Federal agencies • Commercial data suppliers

  6. Map Libraries • via network searches, CDs, etc. • often archival data

  7. State and local agencies Example: QLD NRM&W • Land parcel (DCDB) • Land use map • Place name • Digital elevation model (DEM) • Soil • Vegetation maps • Aerial photography • Etc.

  8. State and local agencies • Example:Toowwomba City Council • Street map • Aerial photography • Land use / zoning • Asset and infrastructure • Etc.

  9. Federal agencies Example: Geoscience Australia • maps of 1:250,00map scale or coarser • Various themes

  10. Commercial vendors Example: Geoimage • Satellite images

  11. Australian Spatial Data Directory search interfaces to discover geospatial dataset descriptions (metadata) throughout Australia

  12. Making a wrong decision is understandable. Refusing to search continually for learning is not. Philip Crosby, Reflections on Quality
