Purpose of CAO • CAO processes Applications to Undergraduate courses in Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) e.g. CIT, UCC, UL, WIT, UCD etc • Offers issued & acceptances recorded by CAO • Assessment of Applications & decisions on admissionsare made by the HEIs • All Leaving Certificate students should have received a CAO Handbook

CAO Handbook • provides information on application & admission procedures only • Updates e.g. new & cancelled courses may be viewed at www.cao.ie - Downloads – Changes to CAO Handbook 2014 • Students need to familiarise themselves with the content of the CAO Handbook • Information on courses is available from each HEI & students should consult prospectuses &/or websites before making an application

Strict Closing Dates • Do Not leave everything to last minute • Up to 5.15 pm, 20 Jan - Early Online Application Fee €25 • Online Change of Course choices can be made up to 5.15pm 31 Jan (free) • 1 Feb 5.15pm Normal closing date - Application Fee €40 • 5 May 12 noon expected date – online Change of Mind facility (Free) • RESTRICTED COURSES, DARE, HEAR.. – applicants must apply by 1 Feb

HPAT – Students applying for Medicine • Must register for HPAT at: www.hpat-ireland.acer.edu.au • Registrations close: 5.15pm, 20 Jan 2014 • Test date: Sat 1 March 2014 • Registration - available on-line only • Apply to CAO first as you need your CAO Application No. to register • Registration fee for the HPAT – Ireland test 2014 is €115 ( includes HPAT – Ireland Practice Test with worked solutions) • HPAT Results: late June 2014 (for Leaving Cert students)

CAO Application • Students are encouraged to apply on-line at www.cao.ie • Cheaper & less chance of errors • Don’t limit options at application stage • Will get a receipt of Application online - need to have an email address • Provisional Test /Interview dates for Restricted courseswill be available at: www.cao.ie – Important dates – Test & Interview dates

CAO – 2 Applications in 1 • Student can apply for up to: • 10 – Level 8 Hons Degree courses & • 10 Level 7/ (6) Ordinary degree/ (Higher Cert) courses • 2 separate Applications:Choices on 1 list does not affect the other • Possible to get an offer from both lists – Student can then decide to accept either the Level 8 or level 7/6 offer or to decline both

  12. Order of Preference • PLACE YOUR COURSE CHOICES IN GENUINE ORDER OF PREFERENCE • Ask what is my 1st choice, 2nd choice, 3rd, 4th … • To do otherwise is a grave mistake!

  15. `Genuine Order of Preference NB • Say Applicant accepted either CR500 or CR051 • All other Level 7 courses disappear from list as he/she has been offered L 7 -1st preference • CAO keeps 1st & 2nd preferences on Level 8 list CK603 Energy Eng & CK602 Civil Eng(got 3rd) • If points fall for either in subsequent Rounds applicant will get a new offer & can decide whether to take up new offer or stay with first offer • One can always move up but never down list

Statement of Application Record • Before the end of May, Applicant will be sent a Statement of Application Record • Check the following carefully: • Are all the courses shown &in the correct order? • Are all the codes correct? • Are the exam numbers correct? • Are all exams mentioned? • if there is any error or omission, amend the Statement and return it to CAO • If you do not receive a Statement by 1st June contactCAO immediately

Offer Process – Provisional Dates • Leaving Cert Results – Wed 13 August 2014 • CAO Round 1 Offers – Mon 18 August (6am) • Round 1 Acceptances – 5.15pm 25 Aug • CAO Round 2 Offers – 27 August (6am) • Round 2 Acceptances – 5.15pm 3 Sept • Leaving Cert Viewing of scripts – Friday / Sat 29/30 August • * PLC Late Interviews also in August /Sept

  18. Contacting CAO • The easiest &most efficient way to communicate with CAO is by using the 'Contact Us' facility at www.cao.ie • Always quote your CAO Application number • If you post something to CAO, e.g. DARE supporting documentation always obtain a certificate of posting (CAO back cover).

Grants & Scholarships • SUSI -Online only grant applications system:Applicants apply to Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) via www.studentfinance.ie • Website provides information on financial support for further education & higher education - can help you to assess whether you are eligible & will guide you through the start process. • All Ireland Scholarship Scheme administered by DES &funded by J.P. McManus. No applications are necessary - awarded based on the Leaving Certificate exam results. Available to first-time Leaving Certificate students who have been exempt from paying the Leaving Certificate exam fee &who have attended non-fee paying post primary schools • UCC has introduced Quercus Talented Student s’ Programme aimed at supporting excellence in academia, sport, creative & performing arts, active citizenship & innovation entrepreneurship. open to prospective & existing undergrad students . Scholarships (cont) • Credit Union Bursary – Ballincollig: details & Application Form available from the Credit Union– closing date 2013 was 27 Sept • Sports Scholarships Some colleges offer sports scholarships – if you feel you may be eligible NB you check with the individual colleges. CHOOSING COURSESStudents need to: • Do their exploration – know what they’re applying for • Discuss their options with: • Parents (Guardians) • Attend Open Days talk to lecturers • Talk to students doing the course • Us their Guidance Counsellors • Apply Early ( recommend apply during Christmas Holidays)
