6. Overview of Rebuilding Together Baltimore In 2009, we increased our staff to included 2 full time AmeriCorps members and a full-time Project Manager. 8. Overview of Rebuilding Together Baltimore Fix-It Program�Since September 2009 we�ve assisted about a dozen homeowners through this program. We need skilled volunteers to keep this program going. Safety Monitors Safety Monitor duties include: Focusing on the safe use of hand and power tools, ladders, lead safe painting practices, and maintaining a safe working environment for everyone on the jobsite and ensuring proper quantities and use of PPE. Safety Monitors have the authority to temporarily stop work on the site if unsafe practices are used in excess. House Captains should share the scope of work with the Safety Monitors prior to Rebuilding Day, so that the Safety Monitor can have an idea of the types of projects that are happening. Lead Paint � Health Effects If not detected early, children with high levels of lead in their bodies can suffer from: Damage to the brain and nervous system Behavior and learning problems, such as hyperactivity Slowed growth Hearing problems Headaches Lead is also harmful to adults. Adults can suffer from: Reproductive problems (in both men and women) High blood pressure and hypertension Nerve disorders Memory and concentration problems Muscle and joint pain

31. Lead Lead was in paint used in many homes built up through the middle of the 20th century and was still in paint used in some homes up through 1978. Lead in paint was banned in 1978. Most of the homes we work in were built before 1978, and many were built before 1950. There is a good chance there is lead paint in most of the homes we work in. 32. Lead (cont.) We are requiring our volunteers to approach lead safe practices from a Universal Precautions perspective, meaning assume that every home has lead paint in it. Lead safe practices are important for protecting the occupants of the homes we work in, their families, and our volunteers and their families. If you are going to be disturbing paint, you must follow the lead-safe practices outlined in your packet.

33. Observing these lead safe practices is VERY important this year and in years following. We are under increasing scrutiny from our government funders regarding lead safe practices. Jim is certified through MDE as a Lead Supervisor and will be monitoring work on project sites. Violette too! RTB will conduct lead testing at work sites prior too and following the projects. 34. Asbestos WHERE CAN ASBESTOS BE FOUND IN THE HOME? STEAM PIPES, BOILERS, and FURNACE DUCTS insulated with an asbestos blanket or asbestos paper tape. These materials may release asbestos fibers if damaged, repaired, or removed improperly. RESILIENT FLOOR TILES (vinyl asbestos, asphalt, and rubber), the backing on VINYL SHEET FLOORING, and ADHESIVES used for installing floor tile. Sanding tiles can release fibers. So may scraping or sanding the backing of sheet flooring during removal. CEMENT SHEET, MILLBOARD, and PAPER used as insulation around furnaces and woodburning stoves. Repairing or removing appliances may release asbestos fibers so may cutting, tearing, sanding, drilling, or sawing insulation. DOOR GASKETS in furnaces, wood stoves, and coal stoves. ASBESTOS CEMENT ROOFING, SHINGLES, and SIDING. These products are not likely to release asbestos fibers unless they are sawed, drilled, or cut. ARTIFICIAL ASHES AND EMBERS sold for use in gas-fired fireplaces. Also, other older household products such as FIREPROOF GLOVES, STOVE-TOP PADS, IRONING BOARD COVERS, and certain HAIRDRYERS.

Breathing high levels of asbestos fibers can lead to an increased risk of:� lung cancer. mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining of the chest and the abdominal cavity. asbestosis, in which the lungs become scarred with fibrous tissue.

37. Other Hazardous Materials that should be handled with care Pesticides Bleach and other cleaning materials�Never mix! Unmarked containers�don�t use, treat as hazardous. Paint�don�t dump it on the ground or down the sink. Oil�tanks must be drained and removed by a professional. Gas�know location of gas lines in the house. 38. Hazardous Material Disposal Baltimore City has yet to announce its hazardous materials drop-off dates and locations. Call Quarantine Rd. Facility (410) 396-3772 as RD approaches to see if it has been announced. If paint is non-lead based, put kitty litter in the paint, air dry, and dispose of with regular household trash. 39. General Safety Safety is first over everything else. Read Rebuilding Together Safety Manual and distribute to all volunteers. Safety for you, your volunteers, the homeowners. Appoint a Safety Monitor! Review safety guidelines with the group in the morning. Check in again toward the end of lunch to see how your team is doing. Fatigue can set in after lunch and it is important to reiterate safety practices.

63. Rebuilding Day Overview Start the day early�between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. House Captains should be at the house � hour to an hour before volunteers. Rebuilding Together staff and volunteers will be at HQ at 7:00 a.m. Street Captains will distribute t-shirts, signs, balloons and other materials to houses either the day before or early in the morning.

64. Rebuilding Day Overview Street Captains are your link to HQ. They will visit you periodically to see if you need anything and offer support�they are there to help you! There will be roll-off dumpsters and roving trash trucks. More details as we approach Rebuilding Day. Clean-up should begin at 2:00 p.m.
