  1. ELGIN MAROONS During the mid 1970’s, Elgin High School officially claimed “Chief Mighty Maroon” as the face of the Maroons, to go along with a long history of celebrating Native American symbols. In 2002, amidst a movement involving dozens of high schools and colleges across the country, the beloved Indian Chief mascot of Elgin High was phased out. Now, after more than a decade of being “faceless,” the search is on for the new symbol of Maroon Pride.

  2. There have been universities that “changed their faces…” Stanford University was known as the Indians until 1972, when the school dropped the nickname in favor of the Cardinals. Stanford's signature zany tree mascot burst onto the scene in the post-Indians period when the school didn't really have one. Miami Redskins became the RedHawks in 1997

  3. Sometimes a school's nickname stays the same while the mascot changes. Chief Illiniwek is gone, but the University of Illinois is still the “Fighting Illini.” The Wright State Raiders rallied behind Rowdy Raider, a red-bearded Viking from 1986 to 1997, when the pillaging sailor found himself replaced by a wolf. The school's teams still call themselves the Raiders, though.

  4. The name “Maroons” will stay as is. It will not be changed to the Maroon Eagles or Maroon Bears or something similar. The committee is simply looking to find an image to rally around. This will come into play primarily for athletic and club activities. A committee has been formed to come up with this new face or symbol for the Maroons. The committee includes current coaches, teachers, administrators, community leaders, past and recent alumni, and current students. The image will represent EHS in several ways. It will convey our rich history and tradition. It will display strength and pride. The new face of the maroons will be something that truly shows our values and will stand the test of time.

  5. Some things to think about . . . Why do we need a mascot? Creates school spirit/Leads Cheers/Rallies Fans Appeals to young people Personifies athletic program Ambassador to the school Creates and continues traditions Provides a visual icon Entertains/Performs

  6. WE ARE THE MAROONS - PUTTING A FACE WITH OUR NAME 1.  What image & attitude would you like the Elgin Maroons to project? 2.  Elgin Maroons is our name. What does this name mean to you? 3.  What ideas do you have for the new Elgin High School “Mascot or Image”?

  7. One thing we also need to take into consideration are the other “mascots” already in use throughout the Upstate Eight Conference. We should not be using a face that one of our “rival” schools also uses. Here’s a list of who’s already out there…

  11. What kind of mascots are there? Amphibian/Reptile (Bull Frog, Chameleon, Copperhead, Gecko, Snapping Turtle, etc.) Bird (Blue Heron, Egret, Hawk, Osprey, Pelicans, etc.) Bug (Butterfly, Hornet, Mosquito, Spider, etc.) Conceptual (Bayou Monsters, El Mundo, Hot Shots, Recluse, Spinnakers, etc.) Domestic Animal (Boxers, Chihuahuas, Great Dane, Pit Bulls, etc.) Human (Cadets, Clippers, Mariners, Roughnecks, Titans, Warriors, etc.) Land Animal (Armadillo, Bucks/Deer, Cats(Variety), Raccoons, Stallions, etc.) NASA/Space (Explorers, Astronauts, Challengers, Galaxy, Stars, Voyagers, etc.) Nature (Bayou, Cyclones, Hurricanes, Lakers, Waves, etc.) Object (Cannons, Double Helix, Globes, Jets, Vessels, etc.) Rodent (Beaver, Lab rat, Muskrat, Swamp rat, etc.) Water/Sea Animal (Alligator Gars, Sharks, Crocs/Crocodile, Stingrays, etc.)

  12. The new “face” should be something that can be used in multiple mediums. These could include things like: - Uniforms - Spiritwear - Posters - Playing fields and courts - Letterheads - Life-size mascot costume

  13. So…. What does “Maroon” mean to you? Begin sharing your ideas on Monday, March 3 and “Add a face to our name!” Facebook: Mascot Suggestion Start Page Twitter Handle: @mascotehs email: ehsmascot@gmail.com or elginboosters@yahoo.com Text Survey – Coming soon!
