  3. Green ICT Efforts in Kenya Introduction Climate change is a reality and easily noticed now more than ever before. It has also been widely agreed that efforts and investment should be applied to mitigate the negative climate change.

  4. Green ICT Efforts in Kenya Introduction • There has been an increased deployment, application and usage of ICT infrastructure in the recent history worldwide. • ICTs have become the de-facto drivers of modern economies and livelihoods in both established and developing economies.

  5. Green ICT Efforts in Kenya Initiatives • Building and construction based on green energy. Solar lucent glass. E.g. the Ngong road green house. • The united nations environment programme (UNEP) green house in Gigiri Nairobi. • Controlled way-leaves for all infrastructure and conduiting.

  6. Green ICT Efforts in Kenya Initiatives • Distribution of telecommunication lines moved from wooden poles to wireless and underground distribution channels. • Type approval of telecommunications to ensure environment friendly devices are used on the market.

  7. Green ICT Efforts in Kenya Initiatives • Regulatory intervention to ensure CC sensitization of the public and operators • Recycling of electronic materials. Increased collection and recovery Points • Operator take back responsibility increased. • Extended useful life of the devices.

  8. Green ICT Efforts in Kenya Sector policies and Acts • Compliance by all entities to e-government. Reduced use of paper. • Academic programs to adopt ICT for all. • ICT based monitoring and evaluation models like ISO certification, strategic planning and Performance contracting

  9. Green ICT Efforts in Kenya Sector policies and Acts • Licensing and authorization of the E-Transactions bill. e.g. signatures • Goods clearance and traction online at the port of entry and exit. Reduced demurrage time and costs. • Collaborations among entities like Anti-counterfeit, KEBs, KAA and security agencies.

  10. Green ICT Efforts in Kenya Setting up of Institutions • National constructions authority. • Kenya Burea of standards -KEBs. • Anti - counterfeit agency - ACA. • Cybercrime policing & K-CIRT • have been established under an Act of Parliament and empowered to address compliance.

Conclusions and Recommendations • Conclusions • ICT is accepted in Kenya as the pillars in moving the country to full industrialization and self reliance. • The country is on track 4 Green ICT • Recommendations • There should be more efforts to loop other entities into the ICT savvy bracket this will provide universal growth of nation and the region. • The tempo should be maintained.
