MS and PhD Positions • Area of Research: Silicon Photonics / Nanofabrication / Integrated Optics / Organic Photonics • Principal Investigator:Prof. Marcus Dahlem, NOOR Lab, Microsystems Engineering • Location: Masdar Institute of Science and Technology • Masdar City, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates • Start Date: Fall 2013 (end of August) • Application Deadline:End of May 2013 • Description: • Several MS and PhD positions are available in the Microsystems Engineering program at the Masdar Institute, to conduct research in Photonics. Successful candidates will be admitted as MS or PhD students, and will work as Graduate Research Assistants in a research project with potential collaboration with the Technical University in Dresden (Germany) or the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA). Research responsibilities include numerical modeling and simulation, cleanroom nanofabrication and optical characterization work. Classes and additional academic requirements must also be satisfied. • Qualifications: • Bachelor or MS degree in Applied Physics (Optics), Electrical Engineering or related field • Strong expertise in numerical design and simulation, nanofabrication, or optical characterization • Publications in research journals and conferences are preferred • Experience with FDTD simulation software, Matlab and Labview is preferred • Academic Requirements: • GPA of 3.0 (for MS) or 3.2 (for PhD), on a 4.0 scale • TOEFL score of 91, or IELTS score of 6.5 • GRE general test score of 155 (quantitative part) • Candidates without a GRE score can also be considered; additional placement exams (for MS) or publications record (for PhD) will be required • Benefits: • Tuition and student accommodation • Health insurance • Laptop and books • Annual travel allowance • Cost of living allowance (monthly stipend) • Application Procedure: • Interested candidates should apply online directly at www.masdar.ac.ae/Admissions.html, and send an email to masdar@mit.eduexpressing their interest.
