  2. Have you ever wondered why a street was given a particular name? Let’s embark on this amazing journey to discover the history behind street names!

  3. If you thought only monopoly has interesting street names like Northumberland Avenue, Trafalgar Square…you are so wrong… Who says…Baghdad is in Iraq only?! There is one here too! Northumberland Rd is here too!

  7. Some streets have such long names!

  8. So how are streets named? In early Singapore, the Municipal Councillors or Commissioners were in charge of naming the streets. Streets were commonly named after famous people, usually as a mark of appreciation for their contributions or service to the community, society or country. Behind the street names are stories about the people they were named after, their lives and achievements and the part they played in making Singapore what it is today.   10. Kim Seng Born in Malacca in 1805, Tan Kim Seng came to Singapore where he made a fortune as a trader. Tan started his firm, Kim Seng and Company, in 1840 and amassed a large fortune in his lifetime. His public acts of charity included endowing a Chinese Free School, supporting the Tan Tock Seng Hospital, and improving the public waterworks in nineteenth century Singapore.   11. Eu Tong Sen Eu Tong Sen Street is named after the tycoon, Eu Tong Sen who was a miner, rubber estate and a property owner. He was one of the richest men in Malaya and Singapore, and was born in Penang, Malaya in 1877. He set up a bank known as Lee Wah Bank which catered to the Cantonese, but was merged with the United Overseas Bank due to financial issues.

  12. Eu Tong Sen rebuilt the street and acquired two Chinese opera theatres. These theatres now stand on the site of People's Park Complex. Eu Tong Sen also built another opera theatre in 1927 known as Tian Yien Moi Toi on this street. This opera theatre was later converted into a cinema and later became Majestic Theatre, which was converted into a shopping mall in 2003.   13. Nee Soon Nee Soon Road runs between Sembawang Road and Springleaf Road. The road was officially named after a prominent rubber planter and merchant, Lim Nee Soon, in 1950. Lim Nee Soon was a prominent businessman who owned several estates. He was a pioneer in rubber plantation, had a large business in the pineapple industry and was a founder of Overseas Assurance Corporation (OAC) and Overseas Chinese Bank.

  14. Nee Soon was also active in public affairs, being a founder of the Chinese High School, a Justice of Peace and a member of the Rural Board from 1913 to 1921. He owned land in the area around Nee Soon Road. At that time, there were many zinc houses along the street which served as residential units as well as shophouses. In 1950, the road was officially named after him by the Rural Board to make postal services easier. Many roads in the vicinity of Nee Soon Road are named after Lim Nee Soon or his family members. However, instead of the name Nee Soon, its Hanyupinyin version, Yishun, is the more commonly used version nowadays. A statue of Nee Soon graces the Yishun Town Park.   17. D'Almeida Jose d'Almeida Carvalho E. Silva (Dr) was a former Portuguese naval surgeon who came to Singapore to set up a dispensary and later became one of Singapore's leading merchants.
