  1. ZoOm! ZoOm! ZoOm! A Multiscale Interface Kirk Hackert

  2. Information worlds are expanding. • CAD, mapping, graphics design, etc. • Presentation desires? • Ability to view from a variety of scales, i.e., • focusing when necessary or showing context • A continuous, natural presentation • Logical progression emphasizing relational structure

  3. Multiscale Interfaces Interfaces that have the abillity to present information at different levels of scale (magnification?). Zoomable User Interface (ZUI) “2D + 1” ZUI’s have the standard two dimensions of space, a horizontal and vertical axis, but also a third dimension of scale. Movement in space = panning Movement in scale = zooming

  4. Original 2D image Stacked Enlargements

  5. A simpler “1D + 1” space-scale diagram

  6. Shortest route from p to q?

  7. Beyond simple magnification • Avoid clutter when viewing “big picture” • Present informational synopses • Allow for appropriate representation with respect to scale Semantic Zooming Allow for not only the scale of information to change but the representation as well. Thus ZUI’s can be more than multiscale. They can be multirepresentational.

  8. Making ZUI’s Much of the work in ZUI’s has been done working with an early development package Pad++. Some of those involved have continued working on a Java based tool called Jazz. Let’s take a brief look at a ZUI in action. MuSE – A multiscale editor looking to make ZUI spaces easier to create. Make changing scale as easy as moving an image laterally on a page.

  9. Fog In a space of infinite proportions, there’s bound to be a lot of nothing.

  10. Create critical areas to guide a user.
