  2. Aims • To engage students with the options process • To start students on the right courses • To start students on courses which suit their learning styles • To start students on courses they can pass

  5. Option Choices • 5 option choices with - 4 hours in Year 10 - 5 hours in Year 11 • GCSEs – one option choice • BTEC First Awards – one option choice • Vocational courses – three option choices

  6. Qualifications

  7. GCSEs • Exam based qualifications • End of course exams/controlled assessments • Graded A*-C (Level two) D – G (Level one)

  9. Level 2 BTEC First Award • One option choice • Equivalent to a GCSE at A* - C grade • Graded Pass, Merit, Distinction, Distinction* • All can pass, but higher grades challenging • 80% coursework(20% external assessment) • Suit students who can follow instruction and meet short term deadlines

  10. Level 2 BTEC First Award Creative Media Production Business Performing Arts (Acting) Sport Health & Social Care Art & Design Music Applied Science

  11. Vocational Options • Count as 3 options Level OneLevel Two Construction Construction Engineering Engineering Hair and Beauty Animal Care & Countryside

  12. Student Support • Study Plus • Additional English and Mathematics • Small Learning Community • Study Centre

  13. English Baccalaureate • GCSE passes in: • English Language • Mathematics • Two Sciences (Core + Additional / Triple) • Language • Humanities (Geography or History)

  14. Pathway 1 Students • Expect this group to follow a traditional academic route • Should predominantly consider GCSEs • Will take the English Baccalaureate • Need to complete a yellow option form • BTECs may be appropriate, especially in favourite subjects or if it suits learning style

  15. Pathway 2 Students • Should consider GCSEs, Level Two vocational courses and BTECs • Can opt into English Baccalaureate • Additional English and Maths may be a good option for some

  16. Pathway 3 Students • Curriculum choice is crucial • Should consider: BTECs rather than GCSEs (where there’s a choice) Additional English and Maths Study Plus Level One/Two vocational courses

  17. Pathway 4 Students • Should definitely consider BTECs rather than GCSEs • Additional English and Maths may well be a very good option • Consider Level One vocational courses • Study Plus would be a good option

  20. How to Choose Option Subjects • Read the booklet • Listen to advice • Choose subjects you enjoy • Choose subjects you are good at • Be an individual • Opt into subjects not out of others • Take a long term view – 4 more years in education/training

  21. Issues to Consider • Do you know what is studied in each subject? • Do you have a career in mind? • Are you considering a Science subject at A level? • Are you considering Higher Education? • BTECs / Vocational Courses / GCSEs But not • What are my friends doing? • Which teachers do I like?
