  6. A Biblical Perspective:Our bodies belong to God • 1 Cor 6:19-20 – “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.” • Once we become believers in Jesus Christ we willingly give possession of our bodies over to God. • Since the time of Jesus’ death and resurrection, the Holy Spirit no longer lives in the temple. The Holy Spirit has a new abode: our bodies! (1 Cor. 3:16-17) • Anything that brings harm to our bodies is destroying God’s home.

  7. Small Group Discussions • Why is it important that our bodies are not our own? • Big Group Follow-up • Do you agree or disagree? • Other than drugs, to what other areas of life might this apply?

  14. A Biblical Perspective:Love God with Our Minds • Mark 12:30 – “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” • Drugs and drunkenness infect the mind in the same way a virus takes over the proper functioning of a computer. • Just as it is impossible to use a computer infected by a virus, it is impossible to live in the power of the Holy Spirit with a mind controlled by drugs or alcohol. • It is only when your mind is controlled by the Holy Spirit that you will experience true freedom.

  15. A Biblical Perspective:Drugs and Alcohol in the Bible • It is not the use of alcohol that is wrong, but the misuse. • In his letter to younger Timothy, Paul encouraged him to take some wine for the benefit of his stomach. • Many scholars have noted that the wine in Jesus’ day was much weaker than today’s product.* • Many of the cultures during the time of the Old & New Testaments were involved in sorcery and witchcraft. The Greek word “pharmakeia” is where we get the English word pharmacy. It was impossible to separate the use of drugs from the practice of sorcery. • The occult link cannot be discounted.

  16. Reflective Writing #6: due Thurs • What creative ways can students have fun, create a sense of community, and enjoy each other without resorting to the use of alcohol and drugs? What can you do to reach out to the youth in your community who are searching for fun? (p90 SGD#2) • Other HW: • Study for Quiz • Work on Group Projects

  21. Gateway Drugs Quiz • How well do you know gateway drugs? • Exchange with your partner and peer correct. • What is a gateway drug? • Merriam Webster: a drug (as alcohol or marijuana) whose use is thought to lead to the use of and dependence on a harder drug (as cocaine or heroin) • Why do teens use gateway drugs? • They are more readily accessible than other drugs • Gateway drugs can permanently affect the way that the brain works: particularly the part responsible for making decisions and determining consequences. • The average person’s brain is fully developed at age 24!

  22. Types of Drugs: Tobacco • Cigarettes are a gateway drug (illegal for those under 18). • Cigarette smokers are four times more likely to smoke Marijuana. • Just because it is legal does not make it good. • All tobacco products increase cancer risk (lungs, mouth, throat, lips, and many more) • Second hand smoke harms bystanders and loved ones. • *Hookah is no safer than cigarettes: • Hookah coals expose you to 3x the amount of Carbon Monoxide. • The water does not filter the burning tobacco at all. • The flavorings create the illusion that it is less toxic, but it’s only an illusion. • Hookah pipes are a conduit for spreading disease. • Prolonged smoking sessions increase exposure to harmful toxins. • http://www.huffingtonpost.com/omar-ghabra/hookah-poses-significant-_b_4906504.html

  23. Types of Drugs: Alcohol (p85) • Alcohol is a DRUG: it impairs judgment and is highly addictive • Alcohol is a gateway drug (illegal for those under 21). • Alcohol breaks down our ability to make sound judgments. • When you are drunk you are lose your freedom to think and act clearly. • Alcohol is linked with more deaths in people under age 21 each year than all illegal drugs combined.

  24. Types of Drugs: Marijuana (p86) • Marijuana is a gateway drug • (federally illegal and legal in CA only for medicinal purposes) • Signs/Effects of marijuana include: • Loss of (impaired) coordination • Increased heart rate (Increases risk of heart attack 1 hour after smoking) • Loss of motivation (your GPA will drop) • Memory loss • Increased risk of cancer • In cancer causing agents: 1 Joint = 5 Cigarettes • Triples the likeliness of head or neck cancer

  25. Types of Drugs: Ecstasy (p86, Rave Drugs green sheet) • Ecstasy is NOT a gateway drug. • Ecstasy is considered a club drug. • Makers often add various chemicals to Ecstasy – such as caffeine or cocaine – causing the purity of the drug to be in question. • “Positive” effects: More serotonin (see yellow sheet for details). • Negative effects: depression, muscle tension, clenching of teeth, nausea, blurred vision, fainting, chills, sweating, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, confusion, intense fear, insomnia, anxiety, paranoia, damages neurons that transmit serotonin in the brain. • Overdose can lead to heart problems, seizures, liver and kidney failure, as well as muscular breakdown. (Linked to many deaths among teenagers)

  26. The Purpose of God’s Standard: p87 • Does anybody INTEND to become addicted? • Proverbs 14:12 – “There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” • Many people have changed their entire lives through mere experimentation. • If you think it can’t happen to you, then you are even more vulnerable because you are too proud to admit your weakness.

  27. How Can I Resist? p88 • Standards must be set BEFORE one is in a compromising position. • Determine to have friends who will not lead you down a path toward addiction. • Determine not to be in a potentially compromising situation. • Determine to seek help from people when you have problems rather than try to escape them or deal with them alone.

  28. “Feeling Pressured” Quiz • Take this peer pressure quiz: • http://abovetheinfluence.com/how-are-you-doing/

  30. Date Rape Review • If the person is inebriated, it is considered Rape. S/he HAS to say yes in order for it to be considered legal according to the law of California. Even if s/he seems like she is enjoying it, s/he can still be convicted of date rape. It doesn’t matter if s/he didn’t say no. It will be on your permanent record FOREVER! • Guys tend to have a really good radar on good guys vs. bad guys. If you have a really good guy friend who loves you, cares about you, etc., trust his advice (generally speaking) when he tells you a guy is no good. • Even if the two people know each other, if it is not consented to, it is rape.
